A Star is Born
Long ago, when the world was new; when only the light of the Sun and Moon shone through the ever dark plains of the heavens, two of the thirteen celestial guardians approached the great Mother. Upon the Celestial Plain she watched, observing the new world below with love and affection. Sensing the approach of her two children, the Sun Mother turned, heeding what they wished to say.
The god of roaring Thunder, Gekigami, boomed in his loud and mighty voice, “Amaterasu, our Holy Mother, long has it been since this world was created. And long has it been that the Darkness grins upon the Celestial Plain-our home and sanctuary.”
Beside him, the meager Wall goddess, Kabegami his sister, spoke in her small and gentle voice, “Oh, Great Mother Amaterasu! We come before you to ask for a reprieve from the lingering Darkness! Please, bestow upon us one who can guard against the villainous fiend who plagues our holy land!”
“It must be brave!” Gekigami roared.
“It must be agile,” Kabegami purred.
“It must be strong and powerful!”
“But also ever watchful and diligent.”
The two continued their requests until the great white wolf silenced them with a mighty howl. Shamefully, both lowered their heads to the Goddess, even the proud tiger god. However, not one to ignore the words of her children, the Sun Mother raised her head to the swirling blackness above their home. In the very midst of it, she painted a single dot with her Celestial Brush.
“From this tiny drop of ink shall be born one who shares my power. She will be everything you have asked for-strong, brave, diligent, agile, and ever watchful and loving to of all things,” Amaterasu spoke, her voice soft, strong and wise. “She will also be the first of her kind, and mother to the rest. The first star of heaven… My daughter; your sister, Hoshigami. May your new life be a pleasant one.”
With many thanks, the two gods returned to their duties, leaving their mother to herself. Dark eyes painted with the color of the dawn looked to where the newest life now shone. A tiny light in the Darkness, with a sleeping baby lynx in its center.
Eyes filled with eons of understanding looked on at the tiny star, nose pointed skywards, “Grow swiftly, my precious child. Your purpose may come all too soon.”
And with a final look over the Celestial Plain and the world down below, the Mother Goddess went to join her children at last, letting the newest sleep.
