Yesterday I had my outline review in Screenwriting. I had pulled an all-nighter to get it finished and I hated it. I knew the ending sucked, and I knew where all the problems were (but not how to solve them) and I was totally mortified that I had to send it out to all my classmates and have them go over it when I KNEW that it sucked. (The one solution I don't have is a career that is valueless in a society without electricity/cars/modern technology, but is VITAL in societies with electricity and technology.)

What other qualities does it have to have? Because stuff like "computer programmer" jumps immediately to mind....

Ahahah. That's actually what it is now, but my screenwriting professor doesn't think it's quite VITAL enough. I suppose I need to come up with a program that's really important that he write-- that means the life or death of the town.

(Essentially, it's a post-apocalyptic world and dude feels worthless because all the power's been out for years until he finds one place that still has power and requires his skills.)

Aaah. *grin* I was thinking "essential to society as it currently stands" rather than "essential to plot," which I should have realized. *considers* I suppose part of your urgency problem is that if he or even all the power should go away/fail, that location is not obviously worse off than, you know, everyone else?

He could be a technician type for advanced medical equipment, if this one place with power is basically the best medical center left for a long way around but they still lost power. Easy way to put lives at stake, but may have absolutely nothing to do with your plot.
