This is a long shot, but I could use some help if there are any Mac gurus out there. I have an old G4 (pre-Intel chips) running OS 10.3. For some reason my computer has just stopped acknowledging anything using Firewire: Two external hard drives and an external DVD burner. A. The drives are no good.
B. The firewire cables are no good.
or C. (Which is most likely) Your logic board went bad.
It sounds like C, like something is up with the logic board reading the firewire. I hate to tell you this, but you probably need to replace that, which wouldn't really be all that cost effective. Are you anywhere near an Apple Store? You can bring it in to the Genius Bar for one of the Techs to take a look at it, but if it's running 10.3 it's probably not going to be very cost effective (Might not even be possible, depending on age) to fix.
:-/ Sorry.. I hate to be bearer of bad news.

It's definitely not the drives or cables, as both worked fine with another computer. There's an Apple Store at the local mall, but I'd hate to drag that heavy beast all the way there just to be told that it's doomed. My desktop was purchased in 2002 or 2003 (Mirrored-door G4) and with grad school tuition and a student film to make, I really don't have the extra three grand to replace it. I'm assuming the logic board is going to degrade further over time? Is there any way to tell how much longer this one might last? Any ways to keep it from degrading further? Is the fact that I can't make the computer go to sleep probably related?
