Thank you all again for the help and well wishes before/during/after the roadtrip. It was very much needed. :) Sunday we got mostly everything loaded into the 14' U-Haul, minus our IKEA computer desks and the entertainment center. It was 2-3 hours of crazy packing, pushing, and furniture tetris'ing, but everything packed arrived safely in the end. The most worry-some items, the TV and all the computer equipment, are fully functional.
On Monday, everything was smooth sailing for the beginning part of the ride. But as Deanie and I crossed into Northern California in the afternoon, the clouds started to turn rather ominous. By the time we got to Weed, California (around 5-6pm) there was 4-6in of slushy snow on the ground. We asked the hotel clerks (two unbelievably annoying 17-18 year old girls) what the forecast looked like through the rest of the night and next morning: Expect another 11-16 inches of snow to continue through the night and into the following morning.
"F* that S* !" (LoL!)
Deanie and I booked it out of Weed and drove through some really treacherous rain/sleet at far faster than we should have by following the tail lights of all the semi-trucks to Redding, CA. What a relief. It was only lightly drizzling and not a snowflake was in sight. We tried not to fall asleep in our food at the Marie Callendar's across the street, smuggled some wine out of the hotel bar for Deanie, settled down to watch 24, and called it a night. We arrived in Rocklin safe and sound by lunchtime the following day and that's when the real work began.
I have been taking LOTS of before/progress pictures so I can throw them all into a powerpoint show for everyone to flip through later. :) It's interesting how on one day, the closet may be organized and the floor is clear of any little piles, then the following day, piles have appeared as if by magic and I have to start the process all over. Buuuuut, the piles ARE getting smaller as I shuffle them around, so that is a good thing.
Micah had today off so we did alot of errand-running. I had a financial aid appointment with Ai-Sacramento to get all my student loans/FAFSA ducks in line. (That was a bit of a mess, but hopefully everything will turn out ok.) After that, Micah and I popped over to IKEA for a computer desk, filing cabinet, and shelf/room divider. The dry sink/crafting table that Deanie gave us has worked out surprisingly well for us too. That'll be in the pictures as well.
I had a surprising confession to make over breakfast that I think everyone will get a kick out of. I've been in charge of organizing the apartment while Micah works. When Micah gets up at 545am, I get up and make him breakfast/put together his lunch/snacks. I generally don't go back to bed (but sometimes I can't help it.) He texts me when he's hopping in the car to come home, so I have 40 minutes to get dinner ready so it's hot when he walks in the door. I'm enjoying my little foray into 'housewifery', something I was extremely loathe to years ago. This phase will be shortlived though, so we're enjoying it while we have it.
When we drove over to the school for the meeting yesterday, we saw all these apartments right across the street. I asked Micah, "Why didn't we just get a place over here so we wouldn't need a second car?" He paused, then smirked a little, "You know... I never thought of that. Why didn't we do that?!" When Micah first lived here, Beale AFB said you could only live a certain radius away from base. Micah didn't like nay of the communities immediately near the base, so he settled in Rocklin, which is the very limit of the prescribed radius. We assumed that SAIC would have the same stipulation, but we were wrong. They doesn't care where you live as long as you can get to work on time everyday. ><* D'oh! Stupid military brainwashing. Needless to say, we really beat ourselves up over that one, but the longer we drove, the more we rationalized that where we live is still a better choice. And even if we were right across the street, there are going to be days where I'll need a car to run errands while Micah is at work anyway, so it would come to buying the car eventually. We're thinking a crossover/Mini-SUV might suffice. Something like a Nissan Xterra or Mazda Tribute. (Got any other ideas?)
When I finally complete the lasts of the organizing, I'll put up the pictures. The Adams' Way Inn in Rocklin will be open for visitors as early as next week. Make your reservations early! Dates for our air mattress and couch suite are filling up fast. ;D
