Didn't ANYONE Go to College?

In my first college class ever (freshman English, AKA English 1A), we learned about something called logical fallacies.  Basically, they're a set of rules for arguing, and they say pretty obvious things like, "when you disagree with someone's argument, you attack the argument.  Calling the person a four-letter word says nothing about their argument ( Read more... )

Wait, you're expecting people commenting on news stories online to have a reasonable discussion about the topic at hand? Or was this in real life?

If you're talking about online commenting...just don't read it. Just don't. I have never seen a coherent, reasonable discussion in an un-moderated comments section. Ever. From news stories to youtube videos, people post the first thing that comes to mind, and most of it seems to be based on their "feelings" about the topic. Intelligent discussion mostly gets drowned out by haters, dumb commentary, and people trying to make other people angry or hurt.

If you keep reading online comments, you'll just get angry and start hating people.....................

To be perfectly honest, I'm usually more interested in the comments than I am in whatever the story is- always nice to know what the masses are riled up about now. I know that I probably shouldn't read such garbage (because it does make me angry and I start to hate people), but I just can't believe that no one seems to think before they write. I'm trying to limit myself to reading comments on the first page only.

And in my experience, people are no better in real life than online. Stupid people.
