Synopsis: Okinawa, where a sunburn prevents two boys from catching some sleep.
Warnings: Yay, drabble. With way too many metaphors.
“Didn’t I tell you to go to bed earlier?”
The soft rustle of bare feet lumbering through sand filled the air that had been silent but for the steady waves coasting down.
Sunset had passed several hours ago, so the only source of light was the waxing moon and a carpet of stars, colouring the otherwise blond hair of the boy who enjoyed the calm that the beach could provide once all the noise and hustling of daytime, produced by tourists and sports, was gone, in a soft light blue .
There was the silhouette of a guitar lying in the sand, next to him , untouched and snuggling with the soles of his chucks.
“I couldn’t sleep. The sunburn won’t let me.”
Subaru sighed when he heard the younger one’s voice, free from all cheer, only softness remaining, and paused, still standing several gaps away from Shota, his sandals loosely dangling from one of his hands.
Neither of them spoke, so Subaru took the chance to inhale the fresh smell of the sea, the night, the calmness.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
Shota was seated a short distance away from the moving of the waves, his knees tugged up to his chest, his hands drawing tiny circles into the sand next to him.
There was a soft shiver running down his spine and Subaru could see goose bumps covering the bare, sunburnt skin of his arms.
“Guess it can’t be helped.” Sighing, he stripped of his jacket and placed it on the younger guy’s shoulders before he sat down next to him in the soft sand, cross-legged, his arms stretched out behind him. Their toes were touching, softly but distinctly, sharing a comfortable silence just as the two boys were.
It was not until a couple of minutes, hours, moments later, when the flood reached their feet, caressing their naked toes, when Subaru could feel the blond’s hand blindly searching for his, soft fingers leaving soft strokes on the back of his hand before coming to a rest, interlacing with his own.
It was the first moment that Shota’s eyes met his, the first moment that he turned his face away from the open sea to look into Subaru’s.
“Thank you.”
