Footfall in Freefall

Jan 18, 2004 10:59

The asteroid gracefully decelerated and swung around starbase668, coming to a relative stop alongside her. storvik engaged security systems and left Surak's Razor, climbing to the outside of the asteroid in his space suit. He lept across the gap between the asteroid and the station, caught the station's hull with his magnetic boots, and walked to the nearest airlock.
A security officer was waiting inside the airlock to check Storvik into the station. Remembering Storvik's last visit to starbase668, the security officer tried to be ready for anything -- and also vowed not to lose his poker face, no matter what the Vulcan said or did. Internally, he was impressed -- someone arriving at the station in a huge rock was definitely something to write home about.
"Have I ever been here before?" Storvik asked, as soon as he was clear of the airlock and facing the security officer.
Ahhh, he's playing that one again, the officer thought to himself. "No, sir, you have not," the officer answered. "I've never seen you before in my life."
Storvik showed nothing as he suppressed a momentary urge to panic. I have travelled back in time! he thought. I've become the other Storvik! Rape and death await me!
"If you'll proceed to the docking area," the security officer continued, "I believe Doctor Khan is waiting for you in his ship, the Drunken Bastard." He winked at Storvik. "I think you know the way. Have a nice day!"
Storvik stared at the departing security officer's back. I must endeavor to spend as little time here as possible. This station is full of lunatics. Storvik proceeded to the docking area, asking three people along the way for the current date and time. Apparently my estimates were extremely good, he thought. We appear to have suffered no temporal displacement at all.
