Yoinked from tartanboxers and miss_celestineThe Big Read [apparently a thing where cities try to get everyone to read the same thing at once so they can discuss it with their fellow citizens; sounds like a sweet program] reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed ( Read more... )

Read Watership Down... it'll make you cry though...

here's my list: 2,4,6,9,12,16,22,28,29,33,36,40,6170,72,87,94,99, not as many as you but I've read more than 6 :D

OH, I wanted to add I read the PEarl by John Steinbeck and Billy Budd by Melville... I think I should get credit for those even though they're not on the list ;)

Haven't read either of those two. And, if we're getting credit for other books, I'll add Saramago. Blindness, in particular.

I agree with Nate: Watership Down is great. Also, you need to read Animal Farm. It'll make you sick with anger. :D

LOL. I feel like that's one of those books I SHOULD have read already. I like these lists for that reason, they're great as a To-Read list. :p

Just having Garcia Marquez AFTER Dan Brown is an insult

WORD. That they're even on the same list is an insult! OT, but my dad knows this guy who collects translations of One Hundred Years of Solitude in every language. Every time someone in the family goes somewhere exotic, we have to bring back a copy. My sister bought one for him in Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Dude must have like a hundred copies.

Actually I'm thinking of doing the same with Philosopher's Stone. I have it in French, English, Chinese, Finish and Russian already.

Also, since I know you like romance and I know you like Atonement, you should read The Remains of the Day. Seriously, it's like the mother of angsty heart-wrenching impossible love stories, and a whole lot more than that as well. Or if you don't have time to read it, at least watch the movie.

Oh, I have a first edition One Hundred Years of Solitude autographed. It's a trophy. I was actually pretty lucky, my uncle got me the first edition when I first started reading, ages ago, and Garcia Marquez came to Panama for a book fair about 4 years ago and I waited in line for hours to have him sign it. I was worth it!

And, back to the list ...yes! What the HELL is Dan Brown doing on this list?

It sounds like a good idea, to do it with PS. I should actually think of doing that ....hmm ...let's see what book is worth it. Maybe something by Dumas. I love Dumas.

The Remains of the Day is going in my to-read list. LOL. Book above movie always, I say, though I've heard the movie is pretty great.

Like I said in another comment, if the list is supposed to be a true all times classics, then there are some very important authors that are missing - Baudelaire, Mark Twain, Fernando Pessoa, etc.

Some of the books are, nonetheless, excellent!

Dome

P.S. I think I read around 50

I feel like I should have read more, but I understand that the fact that I haven't has a lot to do with not being forced to read any of these books in school. (Other than 100 years of solitude, of course!)

Friended you. :D
