I've been pretty much away from LJ entirely since AX's end, mostly due to lethargism that I blame on this bug that I'm still fighting from when I got back. I still need to write an AX report even though many many details will be left out, as I'm beyond the point where memory holds a record of my experiences with much detail. Not to sound heartless, but why should we feel motivated to pull them out of trouble.

The way I see it, with debts THAT high, they didn't do their financial planning properly, & thus only have themselves to blame...

Reading their story, it feels like the opposite - they got hit with extreme misfortune and went way over their planned budget. To throw a con, you have to have room for some debt, but it seems way too much that wasn't predicted went wrong for them from the time that the college that hosted them the first two years changed management.

I hate to agree, but their explanation was way, way too vague for me to consider donating. (that, and ive never gone to the con)

I dont know. Seems that one would do research on a venue to check for these kinds of trick fees. Some places are notorious for them.

I also expect to see a lot more of these types of things happening at cons in the future. Spread too thin. Someone is gunna get nailed with the debt.

I think the vagueness can be attributed to the site being run by a third party, albeit a closely-tied one.

And I'm not saying these points aren't valid - I'd be unlikely to donate a second time if this happens again next year.
