The air all seems to push from her the way he plunges through it, all gone in a moment, a moment, a moment is all it takes; and the jarring of his body seems to echo in her own the instant he hits the ground.
And she knows that this is her penance, understands why carrying his scars will be her price; feels his pulse like a snag in her own and feels herself snag as the strings connecting them catch and jolt but refuse to break.
(And after, she sees him lying in the bed, safely cocooned amidst the bandage-field of butterflies, and wonders if this was the witch's subtly-woven message, if she herself is not the net that catches him and Doumeki-kun is its handle that holds them firm.)
