Jacques x Aila 1sentence
Fandom: Suikoden III
Pairing: Jacques x Aila
Theme set: Beta
Rating: PG, really. These two are the innocent ones. ^___^;
Author’s Note: Chronological order, yo. ^___^ For once in my life, I tried.
01: Walking
She didn’t know whether trusting him was intelligent, but walking after him like this, she knew the spirits would approve.
02: Waltz
In battle, there was something strange he noticed about her footwork, and when Queen pointed out Aila was literally “waltzing” around the enemy, Jacques smothered a smile and pretended to be fixing his boots.
03: Wishes
One time she couldn’t sleep, roused out of her sleeping bag by the whisper of the trees; she’d looked up, seeing Jacques tangled up in the branches of some twisted plant, eyes to the silvery light of a bright star and murmuring a wish quietly under his breath.
04: Wonder
She was uncivilized, a Grasslander unused to the harsh terrains of the mountain, but when they reached the summit and gazed down at the plains below them, Jacques could see it in her eyes that perhaps the altitude sickness had almost been worth it.
05: Worry
Ace wasn’t used to seeing any form of emotion on Jacque’s face, much less about a girl they all barely knew, and refrained from making a sarcastic comment while the blonde looked for a Sacrificial Jizo with a pucker in his forehead.
06: Whimsy
Sometimes she slips into thoughts of a certain quiet blonde, the one with the pensive eyes, and when Jacques gives her a strange, concerned look, Aila blushes and rushes off to talk to Queen.
07: Waste/Wasteland
He feels bad that his arrows were never enough to save her home, but then, he figures, she wouldn’t be here with him if that had been the case, would she?
08: Whiskey and Rum
One time Ace jokingly offered her his drink, and when Aila spat out the alcohol, Jacques quickly gave her a soda so she could wash that biting taste in her mouth.
09: War
“Do you think this will ever stop?” Aila once asked, aiming for a mantor; Jacques didn’t answer, merely fired his shot and then looked at her.
10: Weddings
They’d taken a short moment to rest for a bit; Ace joked about pairing Queen up with Geddoe, and it made Aila turn pink and look at Jacques in careful admiration.
11: Birthday
Aila wasn’t sure how he found out, but one morning she woke up with a bottle of soda and a woven bracelet that smelled just like Jacques.
12: Blessing
“The spirits can see us right now, you know,” Aila said one night, and Jacques gave her a strange, steady look that made her blush.
13: Bias
“Short-hand combat is the best way,” Joker argued, but Jacques thought of a certain Karayan warrior and gently disagreed.
14: Burning
She once woke up crying about the fire on her hands, and Jacques watched from his spot in his tree, wanting to wake her up and tell her it was okay... but he knew it was for the better if she didn’t know he was there.
15: Breathing
Jacques could notice the way Aila huffed and puffed as they trekked around the mountain area (she wasn’t accustomed to the thin air), so he quietly took her aside and taught her to breath again.
16: Breaking
Queen was the first to notice it, that Aila was the only one who could make Jacques smile; she kept it to herself, leaving it up to Ace to alert the others in an ill-timed comment.
17: Belief
Sometimes at night, Aila feels so alone she whispers to the spirits; it’s an old Karayan tradition, but Jacques finds he can understand where she believes it so easily.
18: Balloon
“I think it’d be really neat to fly,” she remarks one day as they are walking on the edge of a cliff; no one is prepared when Jacques looks down at the canyon below them and remarks slowly, “Yeah.”
19: Balcony
“Oh Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?” Queen says; Aila asks her where it’s from, and just when Queen is about to reply, Jacques walks by, mumbling: “Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,” and she can’t help but blush.
20: Bane
“I hate those damn ironheads!” Aila says passionately, and even Ace notices that Jacques has taken a point to glare steadily at any of them that come their way.
21: Quiet
He doesn’t talk much, but she talks more than enough for the both of them.
22: Quirks
“Why do you always sleep in trees?” Aila asks one time; Jacques shrugged, not mentioning that it’s easier to see her face from above.
23: Question
There are many things she’d like to ask him, but there’s something about those baby blue eyes of his that can somehow silence her tongue.
24: Quarrel
When Ace drinks too much and calls her a stupid Karayan brat one night, Aila doesn’t seek solace in Queen but instead finds herself nursing an orange soda up in a tree, next to the comforting blonde who has an arm around her shoulders.
25: Quitting
“You don’t give up, do you?” Jacques remarks one battle; Aila blushes, firing her arrow and then haughtily replying, “No, I don’t.”
26: Jump
The way he sees it, Aila doesn’t think about leaping off the sides of cliffs: she just knows she’ll fly.
27: Jester
Aila scowls at him, but Jacques smiles, flipping over to expose his royal flush and hiding his amusement when she slowly rips the Joker cards to shreds.
28: Jousting
It’s when the group is wasting some time, a mock-fight with sticks, and when Geddoe accidentally knocks Aila into Jacques, she clutches his shoulders and is suddenly aware of the way her heart is beating at light speed.
29: Jewel
It’s also when Jacques remarks on the pendant she decides to wear around her throat, just for the day, and she makes a conscious decision to never take it off.
30: Just
“Just looking,” Jacques said, and Ace and Joker grinned at him, following his gaze to the Karayan girl emerging from the river below.
31: Smirk
He’s got this awful way of never completely smiling, and there are times when she wants to wipe that smirk off his face and ask him what the hell amused him so much, because it was driving her insane when he looked at her like that.
32: Sorrow
He’s not the type for being especially sentimental, but it’s the three-month anniversary after the burning of her village, and so when Aila takes a few moments to be alone and speak to the spirits, Jacques decides this would not be the time to follow her.
33: Stupidity
“You know, this would be the opportune moment to make a move,” Joker whispers to him one afternoon; Jacques looks gloomily at the bronzed girl talking animatedly at Queen and shakes his head, somewhere knowing deep inside he’s an idiot for waiting.
34: Serenade
Jacques is not the type for singing (or even talking), but he figures that if it won over Aila, he’d do it... eventually.
35: Sarcasm
All it took was one ill-timed remark, and Aila frowned, pulled her hand back, and slapped him.
36: Sordid
“Well, that ends one love affair,” Ace remarked later that night; Queen shook her head, sighing, “And it hadn’t even started yet.”
37: Soliloquy
Geddoe catches him practicing an apology the next morning, and all it takes is one glance from Jacques and Geddoe knows not to tell.
38: Sojourn
Queen knows that Jacques still hasn’t apologized when Aila glumly refuses a soda; something is very, very, very wrong when that happens.
39: Share
“That was really mean of you,” Aila says after he apologizes, and Jacques knows that this is not the time to point out that she also shares the blame.
40: Solitary
He likes to be alone, they all know that, but they all have the strange idea he likes being with Aila better.
41: Nowhere
“That boy is gettin’ nowhere with Aila,” Joker grumbled, and even though he himself held an impassive countenance, Geddoe silently agreed.
42: Neutral
“So, Aila, do you or do you not?” Queen asked; Aila shrugged, gazing at the ground impassively.
43: Nuance
“Don’t you think it’s so pretty at night?” Queen asked, gazing upwards; Jacques turned his head, glancing at the Karayan girl staring at him, and murmured, “Yeah, she is.”
44: Near
All it took was a step forward, and he was suddenly so close to her mouth that the distance felt like it hurt her.
45: Natural
“Well?” he asked, and for once, Aila didn’t know what to say.
46: Horizon
It was something he’d always aspired to, but actually feeling her lips on his, it was like he had jumped beyond the point he’d pictured and all the way to the moon.
47: Valiant
“So he finally did it,” Ace muttered, opening a beer; Queen looked pointedly at Geddoe, “Yeah, he sure is an example for us all...”
48: Virtuous
And even though it was Karayan tradition to wait until your marriage for the consummation of a kiss, pulling away, Aila had no regrets.
49: Victory
Jacques knew that this had been a battle long-fought, but looking down at her with her eyes like that, it was all worth it.
50: Defeat
“Do you love me?” Aila demanded suddenly, and Jacques looked down at her, and she knew that the answer was yes; he had lost this part of the battle.
