I don't even know what I mean, I am kind of clueless here. What's the Apple protection plan? The 3G is what I'm getting also, and I'm just terrified that I will have it for a week and lose it or drop it or otherwise have some terrible thing happen to it. :oP

The iPhone has 2 models out right now, the 3G and the 3GS. The 3G is typically the one that's at the $99 price, although you might have gotten a great deal if you got the 3GS. :) The 3GS comes with a bigger capacity and also faster hardware.
The Apple Protection Plan is something Apple has for practically all their products. I think for the 3GS it was 2 years for $70. I'm not sure if it's price of the product dependent or not.
It covers just about anything for 2 years, I think. Take a look at it and do a little Googling. I'm really good about taking care of my stuff, but I know this is one of those things where if I don't get it, it'll be the ONE TIME I drop the sucker and run over it or something. :)
Mine is the older 3G and I won it so I didn't do any of those kinds of things. I'm still paying off another phone on the plan that I was on before I won the iPhone (another 18 months to go...). ;p
