Title: Up a Tree
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: None
Rating: G
Summary: Rose is in deep trouble.

(Based on this line from Utopia- Jack: "I went back to her estate in the Nineties, just once or twice, watched her growing up. Never said hello, time lines and all that.")

Ten year old Rose Tyler pushed a wayward lock of hair behind her ear and sighed. There was absolutely no way around it. Mum's new jumper, the zip-up blue one with gold trim she'd found for just five quid at the market the other day, was totally and completely up a tree. Literally.

Rose had liberated it from inside when Mum had gone over to Pamela's for a cuppa and Coronation Street to show Shareen. It had looked so cool on her, even better than on Mum, and she hadn't been able to resist showing off a little when Jimmy Stone and Darren Pye had walked by.

“Wow, Rose, that is so flash,” Shareen gushed. She reached out to touch the blue velour and ran her finger down the gold piping. “I'll never have a jacket that cool,” she lamented.

“Innit, though? I wish it had come in pink, but it was such a deal,” Rose said, sounding just so grown up, repeating the last bit of what her mother had told Pamela earlier.

“Can I try it on?” Shareen begged. “Please?”

“Oh, all right.” Rose removed it and handed it over carefully. Reverently, Shareen tried it on, her fingers smoothing the front down and sides.

“Oh, Rose, it's so cool.”

“Yeah, Rose, it's the coolest thing I've ever seen,” a mocking voice said from behind them. The girls looked around to see Darren standing there, looking tall and cool, if a little scary. “Won't you let me try it on, Rose?” he said in a high pitched whine.

“Not on your life, Darren Pye. Get lost.” Rose turned away and Shareen took off the jacket, handing it back. But, a large hand intercepted it and Darren held it up, a good foot above Rose's reach.

“Looks like I've got it now, eh Little Miss?”

“Give it back, right now!” Rose demanded, hands on her hips.

“Nah, I don't really think so. I think my sister might like it.”

Terror about her mother finding out about her losing the jacket to Darren Pye (and his sister) gave Rose extra bravado. “Then I'll have to call the cops because everyone'll know that my mum had a jacket and then suddenly you sister's got it. They'll think she stole it.”

A look of worry crossed Darren's face. Clearly he didn't want to cause his sister trouble.

“But don't worry. I'll be sure to tell them it was you. And Shareen's my witness.” Behind Rose, Shareen crossed her arms and nodded.

Darren scowled. “Fine, then. You want to be little trouble-makers? You'll get your trouble.” He raised the arm holding the jacket and threw it up in the air. Rose cried out in wordless sound as it landed on the outer branches of a tall tree.

“Darren! Darren, you come back and get my jacket down, now!” Rose yelled at him as he and Jimmy stalked off. “Darren...” She sighed mightily and looked up at the jacket and then at Shareen. “What am I going to do? I can't climb that high.”

“Oh, I'm sorry, Rose, but neither can I.” Shareen put a sympathetic arm around her best mate.

Rose looked around the park, desperate for someone she knew to come by so she could ask for some help. There was Mrs O'Driscoll, but she was nearing eighty, so she's be no help. A youngish woman was coming along, but she was wrestling two kids with her and looked likely to snap out of frustration. There was a dark haired man in a long navy coat, but he was looking at some of the graffiti on the wall and he seemed too... dignified to ask for help.

After fifteen minutes of trying to find sticks long enough to poke at it and having no luck and another ten of Rose trying to climb the tree, the girls were left with defeat and sore hands. Rose blew on her scraped knuckles, feeling ready to cry.

Shareen looked at her watch. “I'm sorry Rose, but I have to go home now. Mum'll be home from work soon. Call me later?”

“If I'm not grounded for life? Yeah, sure.”

The girls hugged and Shareen headed off down the park path to home. Rose kicked the dirt for a few minutes, looking up at the suspended jacket, willing it to fall down into her hands. When that didn't happen, she was forced to give up and go home, to wait for Mum and her forthcoming punishment.

Jackie was about to start dinner and Rose was moping and watching tv, trying to figure out the best way to broach the subject of the unfortunate jumper. Jackie went into her room and came out again.

“Rose, have you seen my new blue jumper? The one I got from the market? I wanted to show Pam tonight.”

“Didn't you see Pam today?” Rose temporised.

“Yes, but she's coming over to borrow a recipe and I promised I'd show it to her.”

“Oh.”

Jackie continued to look around the flat and Rose tried to build up her courage. Finally, when she was pretty sure she was ready to face the music, there was a very quiet tapping at the door. Rose looked up, but it appeared that Jackie hadn't heard it. She opened the door and there, on the doormat, was Mum's blue jumper, neatly folded and actually there.

Rose's mouth dropped open. She looked all around, but there was no one. Clutching it to her chest, she
hurried back inside, closing the door as quietly as she could.

“Mum, Mum, I found your jumper.”

Jackie came out of her bedroom, a look of relief on her face. “Oh, well done, Rose. Where was it?”

“It, uh, must have slid behind the couch.”

Jackie gave her a kiss on the cheek and bustled off to get dinner ready, the returned jumper under her arm.

Rose wandered over to the window, still wondering who could have possibly found the jumper, gotten it down and returned it to the right flat? As she looked out over the darkening park, she saw the man with the long navy coat striding away past the graffiti, 'Bad Wolf' on the wall.

Well, she supposed she'd never know.
