Title: Possibility of Normalcy
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Nick/Greg. Do you have to ask by now?
Rating: PG
Summary: After the splitting of the shifts, we were all a little upset. How do I deal? By writing this.

Greg sank into the couch and let himself relax. A whole shift of dodging Ecklie was tiring, even if he had been out for part of it with Sara. Ecklie put everyone on edge, even Grissom, but Greg still felt a little in limbo with his final proficiency exam hanging over his head. One wrong move and he didn’t even have lab to go back to.

He heard Nick’s Tahoe in the driveway and smiled. Nick had had breakfast with Warrick and Grissom and now they could climb into bed and… sleep. Right, sleep. The front door opened and shut with a little more force than usual and Greg tried not to frown as Nick dropped his kit in the hall and sighed mightily, rubbing a hand over his face.

“Nick?”

Nick started. “Hey man, I didn’t see you there.”

“Tough night?” Greg hazarded. Her knew there was something more, but he was smart enough, knew Nick well enough, to let him take his time. He was a good boyfriend, really, he praised himself.

Nick dropped onto the couch beside Greg. “You don’t even know the half of it. We solved a five-year-old murder with Ecklie breathing down our necks and asking us questions about Grissom. I do not like him.”

“Grissom?” Greg asked, just because he could.

“Ecklie,” Nick replied with a look that was half amusement, half exasperation, then turned serious. “He split us up.”

“What? You and me?” Greg looked surprised.

“Yeah, well, sort of. Catherine’s now swing shirt supervisor and Warrick and I now report to her. You, Sara and one of Ecklie’s ex-dayshifters are staying on graveyard with Grissom.”

Greg just stared at him for a moment. “Can he do that? I mean, he just removed half the shift and didn’t replace them, not to mention being a complete dick.”

“He’s so consumed by power that he doesn’t see what the consequences are. Dammit,” Nick sighed, frustrated. “I’m not just thinking about us. You, Sara, Grissom and Sofia do not a whole shift make.”

“You sound like Grissom, there,” Greg pointed out, wisely nodding his agreement with the point. “One night of the pifflings and we’re screwed.”

Nick chuckled, leaning back for the first time since he sat down. Greg slid over automatically so they were touching, still thinking.

“This isn’t the worst thing for us,” Greg announced a moment later.

“What do you mean?” Nick asked.

“Think it out. I start at midnight, get home around eight am, god willing. You now start at four pm and get off at midnight, correct?” Nick nodded and Greg continued. “So, you can sleep when you get home, I’ll sleep when you go to work and we can actually go out and do normal things in the morning. I hear some things are actually open around ten am.”

Nick stared at him, a slow smile spreading across his face. “I knew I loved you for a reason.”

Greg shrugged as Nick wrapped an arm around him. “I’m irresistible.”

Nick kissed the side of his neck. “You sure are,” he managed before a yawn swallowed anything else he was going to say.

“You know what else is irresistible?” Greg asked, standing up. “Our bed. You need to get some sleep before you report to Supervisor Willows and if you ever tell her I called her that, you’re sleeping on the couch.”

Nick gave a tired laugh as he let Greg lead him to the bedroom, fatigue hitting him like a load of bricks now that he wasn’t worrying. Greg helped him get undressed, not that he need the help, but it was fun, and into bed, Greg wrapped around him.

“We’re gonna need two alarm clocks,” Nick murmured and wasn’t it him to be practical half asleep.

“I’ll get you one for Christmas,” Greg assured him. “For now, though, you’re going to have to use me and my impeccable sense of timing.”

Nick chuckled sleepily, but was out before he could form a retort. Greg watched him for a moment. This was going to take some getting used to, but damned if Ecklie was going to ruin the best relationship he’d ever had. Nick stirred before gripping Greg harder and falling back asleep and Greg abandoned thinking to curl up with his boyfriend and get some shuteye of his own.

Though, he did wish Ecklie would get hit by a bus. Preferably before all the paperwork went through.
