“I mean, all you have to do, it looks to me from the bill, is start a non-profit organization, don’t take any federal or state money, and then offer degrees in any fool subject you want.”

And then any student that actually puts a degree from your institution on their résumé will be laughed out of the possibility of any job that doesn't involve burgers and/or fries. Just because you offer a degree doesn't mean anyone will take your degree seriously.

Yes, I was also thinking that, and that even when people just see "Master's" and hire them anyway the crazy will quickly become apparent. But even though you and I and the majority of the scientific establishment know to look at A) what a degree is in and B) what institution granted it, it gives them stature in the eyes of the public* and that is just insupportable. The real fact of it is that far too many people are incapable of evaluating the meaning of a graduate degree(for instance, assuming that Ph.D. students are brilliant and totally to be trusted on a subject) and it is for that reason that I'm all het up about it.

* "The ICR issued a statement affirming that it is a legitimate educational institute that employs credentialed Ph.D. scientists from around the country."
