compulsory holiday

we've been offered a fortnights holiday on 1/3 pay.

apart from the obvious issues (less cash, work backing up), are there any other issues I ought to be aware of?

All I would recommend is anything that is offered you get confirmed in writing before doing anything as you do not want to be blamed later for doing something that they didn't allow.
