That really bothered me about the Purdy book, too. She goes buck wild with changing historical things, but it's to make the story juicier or more dramatic -- there's no reason for the motto change, though, and I can't stand changes for no reason.

Yeah, taking liberties about stuff we don't know is one thing, changing known stuff (without an actual intentional AU) is another!!!
