That really bothered me about the Purdy book, too. She goes buck wild with changing historical things, but it's to make the story juicier or more dramatic -- there's no reason for the motto change, though, and I can't stand changes for no reason.

Yeah, taking liberties about stuff we don't know is one thing, changing known stuff (without an actual intentional AU) is another!!!

I loved Seabiscuit, so I hoped I would like it, but your review really encouraged me to pick it up sooner rather than later!!
