I loved Lost in Austen. I mean, it is such a goofy Mary Sue, but it's a lot of fun.

Not a parent, and YMMV, but I would say Source Code is OK for a 12-year-old. It might get a little heavy at the end but it's well done.
Spartan might be too ... sparse ... is the word that comes to mind.
