As some of you may know, today on Earth they’re celebrating a holiday called Veteran’s Day. It started out honoring the men and women who died in Earth’s World War One. It’s expanded, now, to anyone who’s lost their life in service to their country and planet. You might have seen some crew members wearing red flowers.
Usually, Captain Kirk likes to say something in honor of the day. Unfortunately, he’s currently in medical and cursing up a storm that he ever chose me as his CMO. The Captain wants me to reassure you that I’m a tyrant and am keeping him against his will, and that there will be a full service tomorrow in the Officer’s Lounge. In the meantime, he's asked me to reflect a little on the day.
We’ve all lost someone. That might not have been true a year ago, but it is now. It might have been a roommate, or a study partner, or even someone you just said hello to on campus. But you knew them, and they’re gone now.
Today is a day to remember them. To remember that their sacrifice was not in vain because we are still here, honoring them by living our lives to the fullest. What good is mourning someone’s death if you don’t also celebrate his life? The death of a person is comparatively short compared to the span and scope of their life. Yet sometimes we spend the most time fixating on their death, the hows and whys. That's not the way it should be, and today's a day we take to correct that.
So tonight, or tomorrow, or whenever you have a quiet moment, spend a few minutes thinking about the lives of the soldiers who’ve passed on. Think about what made them laugh, their favorite foods, how they changed over the years. Remember how they felt about serving in Starfleet, the honor of their duty, their bravery while protecting their friends and families. While protecting us.
As always, my office is open for anyone who'd like to further reflect on our fallen comrades.
