I'm trying to apply for journalism jobs across the country to save myself from my soul-destroying job only they ask for writing samples and I have LOTS but they're all in high-res PDFs and they won't send because they're too big and I don't have photoshop to shrink them and google told me to use some advanced adobe optimizer but I don't have it, ( Read more... )

Looks like you've got some help, but if you're expected to send samples, I think a zip file would be completely acceptable, if you add a note to your cover letter or email explaining that the files are in PDF format and have been zipped so they're a manageable size for emailing.

I'm downloading all sorts of things...

Yeah, your icon is TOTALLY distracting, I think I've said so before. Wait.

Okay. Right. I've downloaded a bunch of stuff that's supposed to help me but none of it's working. :(

I don't know how to zip things :(

I'm so sad about this!

Mikey is my favourite.

Okay. Put your writing samples in a folder (just the ones you want to send), and name it something suitably professional. Now, depending on your type of computer, the next step is different.

If you have a PC, right click the folder. There should be an option under "Send To..." that will say something like ZIP folder or PC Zip Archive or something like that. That's the option you want. It'll make a ZIP of the folder.

If you have a Mac, CTRL+click on the folder, and there should be an option to "Compress [Folder name]". That will also make a ZIP archive.

Any computer should be able to unzip the file. *G*

(ER, just to add, I don't do a lot of zipping on a PC lately, so my directions may be slightly out-of-date. It still should be under the right-click menu, though.)

Ooh, what's that? I downloaded... let me check. Promo PDF and Nitro PDF and am currently downloading a trial of Adobe Pro... But I'm either incapable, or just cursed.

it's an online filesharer thing, more professional than sendspace.

I agree. We use dropbox at work all the time to send big files.
