Why do we game?

It's an interesting question that was posed to me today. Why do I like gaming? What does it offer me that I keep returning to it above it merely being my go-to hobby, the thing that I do because I've always done it?

I think interaction plays a big part for me as well. It's one of the reasons why I like sandbox games so much, an entire world to your disposal.. basically a "giant" playground. I always get excited when the next installment of GTA is around the corner to see what new interactions they incorporated this time (though I was a bit disappointed with IV).
Innovation is also important for me, it's the reason I enjoyed playing games like Braid, Limbo, Trine, Portal or Journey so much.

Like I wrote, I kind of always want more interaction from sandbox games, but I do enjoy them a lot. I thought GTAIV was pretty nice though, since it did have lot to offer. I hear San Andreas was even better, though, especially because it dared to be a lot sillier and 'anything goes'.
