Across the road

A light is still on

Up late, like me

Here, procrastinating

There, perhaps reading

Perhaps studying, doing homework

As I should be

Across the road

A light is still on

The window next to it is dark now

Just one window breaks the black

A leaning picture frame

And the shade of blinds

Interrupt the yellow light

The houses are faint

In midnight gloom

Reflections in window

Accentuate the blackness

Make it like a mirror; faint

Indistinct shapes it shows

Hint at the room I’m in

The houses are faint

In midnight gloom

Where all should be sleeping

And yet here I sit

Awake, wishing sleep away

With so much to do

And so little motive to do it

poetry, poem
