Summary: This Fic was inspired by a scene from an episode of NCIS LA.
Today has just been a bad day all around. First the power went out sometime in the middle of the night, which in turn caused her alarm to not work this morning. Next thing she knows, she’s late for work. To top it all off, S.H.E.I.L.D Agent Maria Hill is due for a mission briefing. AT the rate her day is starting out she may never make Deputy Director in her life time.
Rushing into the conference room, she finds Director Fury, Agent Barton, and her partner waiting. So far not looking promising; as far as she can tell by the glares directed her way. Of course her partner just looks on with his usual blank expression.
“Your late Agent Hill,” states the Director, “Are we ready to begin now?”
“Yes sir. Sorry sir, no excuse sir” Hill replies while taking a seat at the conference room table next to
Barton all the while exchanging glances with her partner who is sitting on her right.
“Your main mission directive is to cause a big enough distraction so that Agent Barton can walk right on into the law offices of William & Jefferson and retrieve the files that we need from their computer servers… Once the file is secure you need to wipe any existence of the theft from the system.” At this point Fury pauses giving each of the three agents a stern glance before pausing on one in particular.
Looking back at him, each agent seems to sit up straighter in the sudden silence. Maria and her partner exchange a look while Barton gives the Director a cheeky grin.
“Remember Barton, do not. I repeat do not stop for coffee on your way back. Starbucks may be next door but I will not have a mission compromised because of your caffeine addiction. We don’t need a repeat of Budapest.”
“Any Questions??” Seeing no questions Fury dismisses the three agents “Your Quinjet leaves in 2 hours.” As his agents file out the door, he gives one last piece of advice, “Everything you will need for your cover identities can be found in this packet of information. Do not deviate unless absolute necessary.”

‘It is like the universe is out to get me today. Today of all days we have to do this op and now I can’t stop thinking of what today is.’ Hill thinks as she rides the elevator up to the office of William & Jefferson. ‘This day always makes her feel old. She never understood how much stock people put into days like this.’
Maria was shaken out of her thoughts when the elevator doors opened on the 18th floor of the law offices of William & Jefferson. Taking a deep breath Maria starts walking irately down the hallway towards the front desk of the law office she wants to be at. As she enters the door way she looks at the photo of who she assumes is William & Jefferson on the right hand side of the room above the brown chairs.
“Who’s better William or Jefferson?” Maria inquires of the switchboard operator while indicating the photographs that she noticed when she first walked in.
“For?” The switchboard operator answers courteously.
“For taking every stinking penny” Maria replies like a woman on a mission.
Amused the switchboard operator directs Maria “You have definitely come to the right place. Please have a seat and someone will be with you momentarily.”
Maria turns around and walks over to one of the chairs she spotted earlier mentally preparing herself for when her partner walks in the door way.
“Showtime...Such a shame that mom and dad have to fight on this lovely day…Makes me wish that I had some popcorn handy to just sit back and watch the show” Barton could not resist commenting.
Her partner swaggers on into the law offices of William & Jefferson and stops dead in his place immediately after seeing Maria in a chair off to the right of the room. “I do not believe it” He says with a hint of irritation in his tone.
“I was here first you no good for nothing snake” Maria responds with defiance in her voice.
“Uh-huh, so you’re going to use my hard working earned money to steal my money?” He responds with a touch of skepticism in his tone also with a bit of anger.
With all eyes on this little display in the lobby of the law offices of William and Jefferson, Barton is able to walk past the front desk without so much as a look his. Dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase it is assumed that he works somewhere on the 18th floor and is able to move about undetected without so much as a second glance in his direction. It also helps when everyone’s attention is fixed somewhere else at the moment, making his job just a little bit easier.
“Every last penny that you have I am going to enjoy taking from you” Maria retorts back with a dirty look on her face.
“That is it…I have had it up to here with you” Her partner replies with an angry look on his face while gesturing.
He stalks towards Maria where she is sitting and grabs her purse but before he can take it she grabs on to it and would not let go forcing her partner to grab her arm pulling her from the chair.
As she is being pulled up Maria screams at her partner “Don’t you dare touch me. Give me back my property.” When she is standing up and settled on her feet, she pulls back from her partner pulling her hands and bag away from him. “Don’t touch me!!! What gives you the right to lay a hand on me?”
The switchboard operator is just sitting behind the front counter with a stunned look on her face as she watches the scene that she is in the lobby in disbelief.
Pretending to be fed up with all this nonsense that is his fake soon to be ex-wife, her partner finally yells “Fine!!! See if they will even take your business” while pointing at the switchboard operator. “After that last stunt you pulled no one is going to want to take your case.
Giving her partner one last look Maria turns her back on him and kind of chuckles at him while walking over to the lobby counter to possibly speak with the switchboard operator.
It seems that all that pent up emotion from the stupid day she is having is welling up to the surface. One of the covers that they agreed upon to buy Barton more time is that one of the reasons his undercover persona did fight the divorce was that he thought she was having an affair and would not let her take a single penny because of it. Her undercover persona would never talk about work or really anything related to the topic of work and she was always working these long or weird hours without so much as a warning to her husband.
“I need more time guys” Barton’s voice transmits though the comms in their ears “Who knew that you could both argue like that…I’m sensing some serious tension between you two.”
Wanting to punch Barton, but unable to, he channels all his anger into the previous mentioned cover. To keep the distraction going her partner yells at Maria’s back “How are you even going to manage to pay the retainer? I locked you out of all the accounts. Or maybe they’ll take in-kind contributions, like you so freely gave to Jasper. Or was his name…Jared…Or Jake?”
Maria couldn’t believe that this was the cover or contingency plan, out of all of them, that he decided to go with. Fed up with him she turns around and points her finger at him and states with defiance in her tone “Shut up!!! You shut your mouth right this minute.”
The switchboard operator finally gets some common sense into her head because the next thing they know is that she gets on her head set and calls security. “Security to the lobby.”
As the switchboard operator is calling security her partner just keeps on rolling with the charade, adding more names to the list he seems to be developing. “And the butler and the personal trainer. Ring any bells?”
“Don’t forget the mailman” adds Barton who is clearly enjoying this situation way too much.
Now Maria seems to be really angry, screams, while pointing her finger at her partner “Shut up. You shut your mouth!!!” Knowing that the vase of daisies is right behind her she grabs them at throws the whole thing, vase and all, at her partner, who manages to duck making the vase and flowers to fly over his head, shattering against the wall.
Interjecting seems to be a favorite of Barton’s “Really Hill a vase of flowers…Couldn’t you think of something more original like a lamp or a paperweight?”
Now the switchboard operator is calling security over and over again hoping someone picks up and comes to deal with the situation in the lobby. People are also coming out of their offices to see what all the trouble is about.
Her partner of course retaliates after what she just did to him. Caught up in the heat of the moment he runs up to Maria and grabs her all the while saying “You one very insane woman.”
Fighting back Maria has to remember she is a civilian, a helpless girl who doesn’t know how to fight physically, even though she wants to nothing more than to punch both her partner and Barton’s lights out. Screaming loudly she yells “No...No…No…Get your hands off of me this instant!!!”
Her partner is restraining her and not letting her out of his arms shouting “You are insane. One clearly insane woman. You know that?” Although it does look like they are fighting each other, trying to injure the other person.
Still trying to get her partner to let her go she screams “Get off of me!!! This is assault…I demand someone call the police and report this man at once.”
Suddenly security comes running over to where they are fighting. Three guys come in and they head over to where Maria and her partner were each trying to kill each other, attempting to pull them apart.
“Done…Wrap it up guys” Barton instructs.
While the commotion increases with the presence of the security officials Barton uses that time to slip quietly down the hall like he is a regular employee taking his lunch break to seek someplace where there is less noise then there is on the 18th floor. Looking at his watch he figures he has time for a quick Starbucks run on the way to the Quinjet.
Finally, after pulling them apart security escorts Maria and her partner from the building. Once they are released on the side walk outside the main doors of the building, they separate, each going separate ways to meet up at the extraction point. Overall this was not the worst way Maria would have chosen to spend her birthday. She always enjoys the missions where some sort of undercover work is used versus the missions where she ends up being shot at.
Arriving at the Quinjet, Maria walks up to her partner and punches him in the arm then turns to Barton and punches him in the arm. “Really the butler and the mailman” she glares at the two men, letting her displeasure known.
“Aww come on Hill do not be like that, it worked didn’t it. Knowing would not have made your reaction be genuine” Barton complains before taking a sip of sweet deliciousness.
“A little heads up would have been nice though,” she clarifies.
Giving a pointed look she adds, “At the very least you could have brought us a cup.”
“Fine, we promise that we will somehow give you a warning when Barton or I decide to go off script for a second. Next time we’ll implement a safe word for when things need to be shaken but not stirred.”
Glaring at the man sitting across from her, Maria says through clenched teeth “Do not make me punch you again Coulson.”
