I have heard both fur and silver. My bet is fur.

And the story is randomly attributed to a good twelve different cultures, and they don't know which was the first one. But Charles Perrault brought the French version to England.

And this is unscientific information but also my hazy memories of reading a lot of fairy tale books as a wee-ling.
