Wow, Doctor Who.
"We knew from "The Five Doctors" that Rassilon wasn't quite entirely dead, and also that he was something of a dark, scary, power-hungry guy. Of course, in the ultimate extreme, the Time Lords would attempt to bring him back, like some sort of Gallifreyan King Arthur. And of course he would take them to dark and scary places. And of course they'd follow him, because he's fucking Rassilon."

astrogirl2 Hehehe. This.
Overall? What an unbelievably WTF episode. But I loved it, loved it to bits, because it did what Doctor Who does better than any other programme for me: alongside the astounding WTF and Time Lords throwing jewellery at the Earth through a hologram and Wilf getting in a gun turret and blowing up missiles and 6 BILLION MASTERS all obeying one another for some reason, it gave us a simple, quiet story about the Doctor trying and failing to come to terms with his death.
I did think the regeneration scene went on a bit too long (plus the bit of extra WTF at Martha/Mickey - where did that come from?), but at the same time, if it had been shorter it wouldn't have worked somehow. The trip to see Rose was perfect - while I thought Rose was gratuitous in last season's finale and was getting very tired of her, this clip reminded me why I liked her once upon a time. And it made so much sense; of course the Doctor would try to see her one more time before he died.
I don't really have to mention the slash. It kind of mentions itself. The Doctor propositioning the Master was wonderful, a proper reversal of the way it used to be with Three and Delgado. And who ever thought "get out of the way" could be so romantic?
Bernard Cribbins is a god, and we shall worship him.
All in all, there were so many wonderful things about this episode. It was crazy, yes, and in many ways highly flawed, particularly when you consider both parts together - what was speeding up the Ood's development? Nothing, apparently. Or maybe the Doctor just forgot about that when his boyfriend the Master turned up? The White Woman and the disappearance of the Master not being explained doesn't really bother me, as they can obviously come back to that, but the Ood thing is annoying. See above for my opinions on Rassilon. I am also firmly behind the plan to refer to his Super Death Glove (c) as 'the Risen Mitten'. :D
I'm going to miss Ten, although he's never been my absolute favourite, and I think I'm going to miss RTD despite myself. Despite Tinkerbell!Jesus!Doctor and the Wangst and All-Characters-Must-Appear-In-Every-Finale and Rose worship and everything else I disliked about his writing.
Very excited about the new season though - it's definitely time for a change. Roll on Spring! :)
