☣skipped a beat.

Thirteen black sedans with a pair of guns, but people hear double the carnage and double the bang bang bang. A whole lot of misses and stray bullets, but he's shot right through the mark and flesh with seven bullseyes. It takes a split-second for his breath to stop coming, and it takes a few minutes later for the news to start raving about the young man reckless enough to challenge their Master, their King, and their God. You can almost see the smirks and grins on everyone's faces as the headline flashes ONE MAN GUNNED DOWN &IT'S ALL FOR KIRA--
But there's one person that isn't rejoicing.
He's got his hands full at the moment, but his eyes aren't busy enough to stop, look, and watch as the reporter drinks his fill of the hilarious demise of one fool that dared just a little too hard. All it's lacking is the extra, extra, read all about it attitude, and maybe then, it would have elicited something more than just furrowed brows from the man behind the wheel. Fingers tighten around the leatherette circle as he diverts his attention back to the road, trying to block the images he just saw but knowing all too well he can't. 'cause the reporter's still talking, and the news is still fresh, and he could just see the bloody massacre from the corner of his eyes.
He was supposed to make it to Nagano, he was supposed to get the black soldiers off his trail, he was supposed to sit there and wait for Mello to never come--
And then the thought just hits him.
It was only a few nights ago when the plan to kidnap Kira's main bitch was put forward on the table, and he could remember it crystal clear. Every detail was polished and shined to the core, gone over twice and maybe ten times more to make sure it was etched in their heads with no room for loose ends. Matt wasn't looking at him the entire time he talked, but there was a single moment when he did look up and made eye contact, when he didn't bother to pause the game he was playing, and when he cursed at the exact second GAME OVER glared right back at him because he took too long in that moment of silence.
Mello thought nothing of it back then-- just dismissed it as nothing special and moved on with the night. But he should have taken notice. He should have known better. This is my last pack versus you can buy a new one, I think it'll last versus wouldn't you need it for the day after, they'll get soggy versus--
I was reckless, Matt.
"I'm sorry I got you killed."
That will be my one last mistake.
And there goes the clock, ticking down the last few seconds, but who's counting anymore?
