Carbonated water is one of my favorite things. You can buy them without sweetner, with sweetner, with flavor, without flavor, and they are about 59 cents for a 1 liter botlle at like Walmart or Kroger.
yeah aspartame isn't that great for you, but i think its only present in the diet sugar-free drinks? i read it can cause cancer too, but then almost anything can cause cancer in fact. technically speaking, breathing in air causes cancer. not much we can do about that one. i'm not a huge fan of fizzy drinks, coke is my favourite though, and i try to limit myself to only drinking it when out to eat at a restaurant or something. not at work or in the house too much. my favourite drink is really orange juice, which is pretty healthy. but then again, too much vitamin-C can also cause cancer! :/
asparatame metabolizes into something close to formalydehide. Scary.
I'm sort of cursed/lucky when it comes to soda. Anything carbonated hurts my throat, ESPECIALLY Coke Classic, and especially anything from a can or bottle. So I never drink those. I almost always drink water or unsweetened iced tea. I do have a fondness for fountain Pepsi, but I may have one a month.
One thing that I've found makes water drinking at work easier, is that I buy the big Archer Farms water bottles and refill them from the cooler.
aubrey, i faced this same issue awhile back. i decided to cut out diet soda for a few reasons, some of what you've mentioned here. what i ended up doing was getting a good 32oz water bottle, and buying gallon jugs of water. i HAVE to drink my water cold, so i fill it 3/4ths of the way the night before and freeze it. then i fill it the rest of the way in the AM. we have a water cooler thing at work, so i fill it with that throughout the day - but if you don't like the water at work, maybe bring gallon jugs or even have a backup water bottle to get you through the day. (the water bottle i got was the LLBean type, it was about $6 but i figure... i spent more than that in a week and wasted far more plastic.) i do have either a cup of coffee or a diet coke once a day though - i can't kick the caffeine habit altogether.
cutting pop out of your diet is nearly impossible. believe me, i've tried a thousand times. in high school, i ran on track and cross country and we weren't allowed any pop at all. then, it was easy to give up because i had other people doing it with me. but now that i sit in a cube all day and answer a phone, i NEED caffeine. i don't like coffee, i get bored of tea (believe it or not) and pop is cool and tastes good and is accessible.
so yeah. its a battle but its definetly one worth fighting! good luck!
