I'm 35, live with my partner in a house that my parents bought as in investment. Cheap rent for us, but we rent the other three rooms out. We've been doing this for 11 years. The nice thing is that it's *our* house, so the same issues with feeling like it's not our house are reduced, but my partner definitely wants our own space instead. The amount we save is huge, so it works well for us for now.
For your own space, make sure everyone knows that you prefer your own space, and talk to the roommates about preferring for your own space and need for down time. Just because you live with friends doesn't mean that you have to do everything with them all the time. Communication is key, and not leaving notes when there's things that people don't like.

Welcome back to LJ. I have been used to people drifting off from LJ, but its good to hear from someone again.
Sorry that I can't say anything more insightful right now.
