omg! bonnaroo pictures!

Aug 23, 2008 16:01

i'm on a roll, so here we go with bonnaroo pictures. about 25 are beneath the cut...my pictures range from pretty freakin awesome to blurry and not so great. i hope they captured the spirit of the 'roo! ha.

bonnaroo kicks ass. plain and simple. people say it's life changing, and it totally is. sarah and i had such an amazing time, i don't even know where to start. we started our drive at 2 am out of cincinnati on wednesday and was finally set up at our campsite by 3 pm on wednesday. long, but incredibly worth it. the last i heard was there was about 60,000 people in attendance, which seems a little low to me, to be quite honest. we barely slept at all that weekend due to the tennessee heat and just having too much to do music-wise, but we had this unusual adrenaline that kept us going. because bonnaroo is all about the music, here is a recap of the artist we saw:

THURSDAY
lez zeppelin- an all-female led zeppelin tribute. i'm telling you, these ladies were LEGIT, for real. probably one of the best shows we saw all weekend. they did not mess around and as a tough zeppelin critic, they stuck so close to the music. we got an awesome 'dazed and confused' solo, and even 'in my time of dying.' awesome.

that was the only show we did that night...obviously we were completely exhausted from the day we had, so we called it a night then.

FRIDAY
tegan and sara- we stayed in the lawn for this one, as we were kinda both unfamiliar with their music. they are so cute, joking and whatnot with each other. not a huge fan of the music, but it was entertaining. we didn't see the whole set.

les claypool- aka the bassist lead singer of primus. again, we hung kind back for this one. he was just as weird as i expected! we left early to see...

the raconteurs!- completely legit. we got there right as they were starting, and somehow managed to secure an awesome spot on the side rail! i think we stayed for maybe 5 songs, because we had to get to M.I.A. what we heard was awesome. they are a good live band

M.I.A.- and so the insanity begins. this lady is absolutely nuts. we got there early and was about 4 'rows' back. a few songs in it got super crazy and sarah got jacked in the head, so we had to move out of the pit. we watched the entire show and it was mind-blowing. african boy even guest performed on 'hussel.' it felt like a kind of historic performance

metallica- great live band. we managed to get pretty close, though we did not trek into the pit because metallica fans are NUTS. we missed the first couple songs, but i heard everything i wanted to hear. i'm glad i finally got to see them.

my morning jacket played a legendary set that night, but we were exhausted after metallica and called it a night

SATURDAY
cat power- we maybe stayed for about 3 or so songs for cat. she was quite good but we weren't too familiar. plus, we had to get to...

ben folds!- sarah was more excited about ben at first, but i was sucked in after witnessing this awesome show. he is a great, great performer and we got to hear 'bitches ain't shit' performed for the last time EVER! so much energy...i am glad we stayed for the whole time.

jack johnson- disappointment of the weekend. well, kinda....i am not a JJ fan so i didn't expect a lot, but we saw most of his set and it was rather boring. good thing eddie vedder came out for a song to spice it all up. :)

PEARL JAM!- obviously the highlight of the weekend for me. after JJ, sarah and i pushed our way forward and ended up at the front of the second rail behind the pit, off the the side. i could NEVER score a spot this sweet at a regular PJ show. it was absolutely epic and one of the best shows i've seen. i still get chills thinking about 'hard to imagine.' i still cannot believe i witnessed this!

kanye west- yes, it's true, he did not come on until 4:30. i watched 2 songs and then went to bed, sarah stayed the entire time. another disappointment...kanye, please, why did you come to bonnaroo again?

SUNDAY
the coup- i was so elated to see the coup, mostly because they were performing on the smallest stage in the festival. sarah stayed back and tour down camp, so i went solo and slipped onto the rail, centerstage. it was only a half hour show, but it was amazing. boots riley has got the flow.

robert randolph's revival- another artist sarah was more excited about than i was...but after this performance, i am quite the fan. he is a TALENTED lap guitar player. again, we managed to get on the rail, slightly off of center. this is also when sarah and i saw robert plant sitting about 20 feet away from us...epic all around.

robert plant and alison krauss- breathtaking performance. and we got 2 led zeppelin 'covers!' we got into the pit at the mainstage on this one, second row, off to the side. it felt surreal, seeing as we just saw robert hanging out backstage. it was a good way to end the weekend.

onto the pictures! i didn't photograph everything, but these are my personal favorites.
