Mod!Post - Hotlinking

Nov 13, 2009 09:50

Hello, everyone.

I am not pointing fingers, because the current culprit is not a part of this community and my guess is she has no idea that she's chewing up my bandwidth the way she's using her banner.

But, I do think this is a good opportunity to point out that...yes, Photobucket DOES let you track where your bandwidth goes.

take a look at this nifty graph )

I know the forum that's driving that traffic. I have one animated gif that I use in my sig for that forum and a single avatar. Those two files stand out like a sore thumb in terms of sheer usage for everything else in my personal domain so I can certainly understand how you're being hit.

Really, if people don't know how to host their own graphics elsewhere (and I think that's a real issue!), I would be happy to help people set up Photobucket or other graphics hosting accounts as I'm sure you would rather than seeing your own graphics disappear if the account goes over bandwidth.

*thinks maybe it's time to write up a 'how to host your own graphics' tutorial*

I do, too. Sure wish proboards would allow you to save so many megs and keep all the bandwidth on the site, but what am I saying? That would require proboards to upgrade again, ha.

Yeah. I don't belong to the forum-don't read enough fanfic to make it even worth my time-but I think something needs to be said over there, because that forum gets a ridiculous amount of traffic.

I'd definitely link to your tutorial :D

I'm a member and I'm appalled at the size of some signatures with four or five graphics in each. Even with my high-speed connection, a discussion page can take a while to load and there are hundreds of pages for a given episode in the spoiler and then in the episode discussion forums. (When I looked yesterday, they had like 168 pages of posts in the "Pandora" spoiler topic alone.)

They're very good about enforcing a "no-spoiler signature" policy and I think they might even have a total size of signature policy but it's probably not saying anything about filesize and I know they don't enforce any oversight about hotlinking (though they discourage that).

Honestly, signatures are the #1 reason I got tired of forums. They just drive me crazy. Completely crazy. Show some restraint people, good grief!

I did brush off my DI account long enough to send a message to her about it. I renamed the file and told her it was still available if she would save it to her own account.

Holy cow, that's a lot. How do you get to stats on PB? I've never found them.

Up in the top right where the other menu options are there's a "stats" option. I only clicked it today; I wish I'd looked sooner. But isn't that insane? I mean, seriously.

For now that particular graphic has been renamed and if they want to retrieve it, it's still on the post where she got it from with a big DO NOT HOTLINK memo underneath it. I could've just talked to her, but...well, I guess I wanted to make a point. Heh.
