Nothing really changed. The Goddess was dead. Daein had a new monarch. But still, nothing had changed. Nothing that mattered anyway. After all, he was the same man he’d always been.
Things were out in the open, but their situation wasn’t a secret. Except maybe to Ike. Soren pushed a strand of hair behind his ear and watched Ike as he leaned against a tree. The mercenaries were home and everything was finally at peace.
Almost at peace.
Soren saw the tension in his shoulders, the stiffness in his neck. Ike’s back was to him, but he knew the circles under his eyes grew darker by the day. Soren knew the blueness of his eyes had dulled and gone a few shades grayer. The same was true for his complexion and Ike’s mood. Before Soren finished accessing Ike’s ailments, he crossed the compound and stood a few inches from Ike.
“Commander,” the word felt odd on his tongue, but any sort of endearment like honey, baby, or love felt… odd.
“You know, it’s kinda weird that you still call me ‘Commander.’” The hint of a smile started, but Soren didn’t notice; he only saw the lines at the corners of his lips.
“You’re staring again.”
Ike didn’t respond; he kept his focus fixed at the hills in the distance. They stood there in silence, not touching or looking at each other. They watched the sun fall and the colors blend.
“I want to leave.” Ike glanced at Soren and he replied with a nod.
“To go where?”
“Anywhere. Everywhere. Somewhere that isn’t here.”
“Allow me to pack the proper provisions and then we can leave by the morning light.”
The wind blew Soren’s hair back into his face, and he swiped it behind his ears again.
“You’re fine with this, Soren?” The lines in Ike’s face became more pronounced; the wrinkles near his temples and across his forehead were emphasized.
“Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“But this is home, and… we won’t come back.”
The sun played across Ike’s face, and for a second Soren saw the boy he fell so in love with.
“I’ll start the preparations.”
“But--”
“You are my home, Ike.” Soren met Ike’s eyes and held them for a moment. He nodded and turned to go to his quarters. That hinted smile bloomed on Ike’s face. The world was different now, but their world hadn’t changed.
