I have a little rotary pastry cutter that I found at a yard sale years ago for a quarter. It's a triangle with 3 small wheels at the points which have different wavy patterns on the edges. You just roll out the dough and cut strips with the tool. The strips are soft enough to bend into shapes. They are finished and reinforced with an egg white glaze, which also sticks them to the prebaked shell.
I dont get to use it that often, since I prefer a full top crust on the pies I bake most often.
I forgot to mention the decorative motif: the galactic swirl with an infinity sign in the middle means "cosmic blueberries into infinity" as well as commemorating the anniversary of the moon landing - venturing into the infinite void, infinite possibilities for humanity and all that.
