Aloha. I know that I've been back in the country for a week, but this is my first time online since before christmas. I'm not sure how to put stuff behind a cut, so apologies for the long message ( Read more... )

Hi!
Firstly, this isn't a long message... and it's relevant! (not a 800 word post all about a character background, for example...)
Secondly, < lj-cut > (without the spaces.) (and it might not have the hyphen either, I can never remember, just preview it, and if you can see it, make the hyphen a space too...)
Thirdly, Hi!

How do you remember all of this stuff!
...I'm still stuck on 'is it a hyphen or is it a space?'

One thing you have to remember when in the US with regard to their tipping mentality. The US does have minimum wage laws, however most service establishments are exempt from them because the law expects the staff to be getting tips ( ... )

Yeah, I knew about the tipping to supplement the wages thing. However, I didn't realise that they could end up only earning only $3.00 per hour. I might have tipped more, although my finances were a little restricted, considering the cost of getting there.

I hope you bought those pearls!

Seems like a bigger culture shock than I'd expect from a nation whose media we're gorged on constantly.

But it sounds like a lot of fun! Looking forward to seeing you again at the cons! :D

Yep, I bought some pearls. Mostly for other people however. Some damn nice souveniers for a nice price.
Some culture shock, but not too much. Whenever I'm overseas I do tend to compare the differances between the cultures - it interests me as a "culture studies/sociology' student (which I am currently studying).

Yep, looking forward to seeing at Arc soon!!!

This reminds me that I will be in for a rude culture shock returning to Australia after three years. I was amazed by the consistently excellent service in the Mid-West, and have started taking it for granted.

The toilet obsession might be Hawaii specific. I haven't noticed a preponderance of that kind of advertising in Indiana, in California, or in Washington DC.

Hmmm, interesting. I can't think why it would specifically be a hawaii thing - unless it's something to do with coconut and pineapple...
