craft center volunteering is awesome. I don't understand what you mean by, "going to need someone in the photo dept." Are you applying for the manager job? The volunteers basically work everything, not specific departments. Some cut deals about working on the tool room and such.
In any case, I highly suggest you volunteer. Just think, free access to the whole cc and its really really fun
It's good that you are getting some you-time and shooting more often. Weather is shit here but its cool because warm fuzzy feelings keep me warm (as cheesy as it sounds).
