It is trauma and the fact that yes, it could've have been much worse does not negate the fact that is something that was horrific that was done to you that shakes up all of the little kernals of what was good in life and can twist it around.
That is one of the things I've found in my new position (I'm an information and referrals specialist for a center of independent living), where even when something bad happens, people are hesitatant to contact me and ask me for the help I provide becaue it "wasn't something that bad," that happened to them. I've gotten very good at just listening to their stories and asking different questions as it relates to their stories so I can find the appropriate help for them... and a lot of times I will have them say, "Oh, but surely that isn't a program for me? It wasn't as if it was that bad."
A traumatic experience is a traumatic experience - doesn't matter what the severity level is.
