I have an unpleasantly drippy head cold today, which is keeping me resting in front of a computer screen instead of completing some much needed chores about the house. (I hope that the other three humans with whom I share a roof won't mind this too greatly. So far, they all have been most kind.)

Yes, the Earth is a closed system with finite resources, but we may become quite adept at recycling rare metals. People already do this by repurposing lithium extracted from material wastes so they can make lithium batteries. Our ingenuity may save us from the problems our ingenuity has created. On the other hand, we may be hatching a catastrophe of global proportions for ourselves.

Who knows? At least for the nearer future, I am quite sure you are right.

It's looking more than 100 years ahead where I feel absolutely clueless, since I don't think it's as easy as we imagine to take proper stock of what resources we have now, or what resources will be in demand in the farther future (and, it kind of gives me goosebumps to realize that my daughter, born in 2000, has a realistic chance of living into the 22nd Century, whatever it may bring).
