"I have been and always shall be...your friend"

May 29, 2009 16:25

2 weeks ago I had never seen one single episode/film of any version of Star Trek. Ever. The only thing I knew about it was that it involved characters named Kirk and Spock who were apparently similar to the ambiguously gay duo. And someone named Scotty beamed people up.
Oh! I also knew that LaVar Burton from Reading Rainbow was in TNG and played ( Read more... )

Thanks!

haha, weren't they? I was actually just talking about RR with my mom earlier. The kids today are seriously missing out. It should be like required viewing in school or something.

OKAY I LOVE THIS POST I'LL BE BACK WITH MORE COHERENT THOUGHTS LATER BUT LET ME JUST SAY THAT THE LITTLE ALIEN DUDE WAS MY FAVE TOO OMG

Oh and the part where Spock Prime says I have been and always shall be...your friend was probably my favorite part in the whole damn movie. My mother and I were both like AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I was actually getting kind of worried on my first viewing. I was wondering when he would show up! He's only in the last half hour!

Ha, you and my father. He was like WHERE'S SCOTTY? the whole first hour, it was really distracting. I loved Simon Pegg though, he was amazing.

THE ALIEN DUDE NEEDS A NAME! DOES HE HAVE A NAME?

SAME! That killed me more than I could have possibly expected.
In general, I loved the way they brought Nimoy into the film. Having him there said, "Yes, this is new and different...but we haven't forgotten about the past either". I really appreciated that. (lol as a 2 week fan)

Simon Pegg stole every scene he was in! I hope in the next movie there's lots more Scotty to make up for his lack of screen time here!

THIS WAS SERIOUSLY EPIC. I officially need to watch TOS and the original films, and then rewatch XI just to get the full ~experience. Luckily I will have plenty of time for this since all my shows are on hiatus, lol.

You do! It'll feel like a totally different experience afterward I'm sure.

Just remember TOS is rather lulzy and completely on crack. haha. It took me a few eps to even care about the characters at all because all I was doing was laughing. I'd suggest looking up fan favorites if you don't want to watch all 80 or so eps.
And then in almost the polar opposite way the movie series starts out by taking itself waaaay too seriously. When I watched the first one I thought it was kind of dull because of the slow pace and it wasn't until I started thinking about it afterward did I realize that I liked it.

I haven't had time to experience summer hiatus yet because all I've been doing is watching Star Trek, lol!

I seriously love the epicness of this review. I loved Star Trek wholeheartedly, I've seen it twice in theaters already and am contemplating a download. I would watch it five more times in the theater and still pay money to see it again. It was WONDERFUL. I love JJ, omg.

You're making me want to go back and watch the TV series and old movies. I may just have to do that :)

I have only watched it twice all the way through, but having the download now has allowed me to watch bits and pieces so many times that I've probably seen it in full like 8 times by now, lol.
There are certain scenes that just deserve to be repeated! But then I always find myself sucked in and then 15mins has gone by and I realize I should probably be doing something else. haha.

You should! I think having it fresh in your mind as you watch the new film gives you a totally different perspective on it. For instance, it was really easy for me to pick out re-used lines and things like that. And notice little homages to the other films.
Like a bit of the red matter liquid substance floating in midair toward the end was like a scene in VI when all these Klingons were shot while floating in midair since there was no gravity.
There's a bunch of little things like that.

That scene where he's getting Kirk on the Enterprise was so much fun, I can't wait to watch this again. Everytime they did the Vulcan salute I tittered like a schoolgirl, such a dork!

I've just sort of started watching TOS, like 1 1/2 episodes, it's going to take me a while! But George Takei is so cute!

hee! It was. I was cracking up over his giant puppet hands.

Same! I'm such a Vulcan!fangirl

Are you going to watch the whole series? Or do you want some recs on which were my favs or something?
I honestly haven't watched everything yet, I'm hoping to finish that soon enough.

I think I will watch the whole series, the library has the whole thing, it's going to take me awhile though. But I think it would be worth it! If I go on with anymore after that I'll have to figure out!

What ones were you favourites? I've only watched the original/never aired pilot, and half of the first episode.

FYI if you've seen the original/never aired pilot then there's no need for you to watch 1x12 + 1x13 - The Menagerie Parts 1 +2. In those episodes Captain Pike is discovered all disfigured with a robot body that looks like a trash can because of some tragic space accident. So Spock tries to take him back to those aliens that captured him in the never aired pilot so he can live under the illusion that he's still good looking and has a normal body with the other disfigured girl.

Basically the whole 2 parts is Spock on trial for illegally trying to go back to the planet from the unaired pilot. He explains his defense by showing the court...the unaired pilot. The entire thing (minus 5mins or so) is shown so watching those eps would just be like watching the pilot again.

And some of my favs have been:

1.05 - The Naked Time (Because everyone is on drugs and therefore it's hilarious)
1.29 - The City On The Edge Of Forever (I believe this is actually the #1 favorite among fans)
2.01 - Amok Time (PON FARR! SPOCK IS SO HORNY THAT HE ( ... )
