12 Step Program to posting more

Nov 03, 2010 16:10

masqthephlsphr  has suggested I update more often - implying that once per year was just not enough.  LOL

However, habits die hard.  It's important to recognize when you need help.  So I went in search of a 12 step program for posting more often, that is, more often than once per year.  Side bar comment: I do see that more than once per year is valuable otherwise ( Read more... )

We only watch one program, "Dancing with the Stars". The reason is easy as we used to (and one day hope to again) did ballroom and Latin dancing and we like to see the progress of people who are, in some cases, starting with no dancing experience at all.

They say it all the time on the program and you can see it, that it's very, very demanding. I can believe some of the people (the stars) really change as a result of the experience.

Yeah, I'm mostly watching House and Garden TV. And some old stuff on Netflix.

But Netflix is "new" to Canada. So I can watch old stuff on something new?

Ha! That leads me to my question: Does Motley Fool really help? My husband loves it, subscribes to paid version. But I wonder.

There's no simple answer to that, but the simplest one is that the best value is the same as something like LJ. It's from having many people looking at and discussing things of common interest. For investing you should be diversified to protect yourself from unexpected bad news affecting one of your investments. It's really tough to keep track of a lot of companies. However, if you share the workload it's a lot easier.

Anyway, it's helped me. I've done much better the indexes.

My question now....to what services does your husband subscribe?

That's the only one I know about, but there are probably others. He watches the market a lot (like hours a day, while watching sports and news) and he does pretty well, so I guess it works.

I meant which newsletter within the Motley Fool. They have several subscriber services. I help out on the "Inside Value" newsletter.

Happy birthday, starryniteshade!

My question is... what did you do for your birthday?

starryniteshade November 4 2010, 23:15:26 UTC
Hmmmm....I'll answer it as what I'm doing "for" my birthday as opposed to what I did "on" my birthday. For the latter the original plan was to take the day off, but an important telephone conference call got scheduled to take place on my birthday. So, I ended up working from home instead. However, Jane and I went out to a nice restaurant in the village nearby (Manotick). This Saturday we'll have friends (Canadians we met while in the Netherlands) for a Dutch Gourmet (pronounced "gourmette") meal where everyone cooks their own food in little tiny frying pans at the table.

Gosh, I was just thinking about you the other day. And here you are! :) Happy Birthday!
What's the most interesting thing in your life at the moment?

As always, the most interesting thing is Jane. I love how she continues to grow and see how she meets her challenges in life. These last couple of years, the garden has become a real joy for her. Then there's my corgi ladies, Charlize and Cleopatra. Living with animals is great as you really begin to experience how one species communicates to another. Don't believe anyone who says animals have no souls. Either they do or we don't. The birds who visit our backyard feeders are fascinating. I love how the chickadees relate to me when I go out to refill the feeders - like, "it's about time bozo".

Work-wise, things have actually ramped up since the Olympics ended. We've been negotiating a 2 year partnership with the province to advance a couple of their emergency management programs. That's actually exciting.

In the industry press, who do you read? As an American in the maritime defense sector, which media outlets will give me an accurate picture of Canadian defense issues, or how the Canadian press and defense establishment views the US?

To the extent that I see stories out of the Canadian press, it's mostly the Globe and Mail, but even pretty rarely that...

We don't really have a great defence press. There's the Canadian Defence Review, which is mostly about official stuff. I don't think I ever recall anything in it about the US. By and large our press is EXTREMELY uninformed when it comes to defence issues ( ... )

I've pretty much been working in the homeland security / emergency management area for the past 4 years. I've not really kept up with the defence side of things, but how would you know that? I never post!

Yes, I suppose I wouldn't know that... It's interesting to me, because it wasn't until I shifted more to media side that I realized how absent Canada is from the maritime security press. Of course, our big stories are mostly Horn of Africa/Piracy. Britain and France have been all over the press, but no Canada...
