Anybody who likes to read should know about bookmooch.com. It's a website where you can post books you want to give away, then earn points to request books from others. You pay postage on the books you mail, but I imagine it should even out in the end. I've already gotten rid of six books and received one, and two more are on their way to me. ( Read more... )

So if I understand this correctly, I can basically trade in my old books for other people's old books and the only expense is postage?

That sounds like a good deal.

Yep, exactly. I agree, it's a good deal! For every 1 book you give away, you earn enough credit to mooch 1.1 books from someone else.

It's a Ponzi scheme! In order to fulfill those 1.1 books, they need to issue 1.21 in promises to the givers of those 1.1, and it continues exponentially until the whole thing falls apart! It's a house of cards that can only survive as long as people don't claim all their credits! It's Bernie Madoff writ small! Aaaggghh!

Nah, just kidding, because a) they don't guarantee that a giver will emerge to fulfill your claim, whereas a Ponzi scheme guarantees that it will fulfill every claim itself. And b) yes I'm aware it's just a bunch of nice people swapping books for fun instead of staking their life savings.

What if your life savings is in the form of books?

(and nevermind what that would say about you...)
