Raw/Subs running commentary

RAW:
- Starts off with a fight with Black Gold Saw during which BRS is stabbed right through, gg there. The eye definitely doesn't need to be 'on' all the time. Cut to Mato.

- Mato is a dumbass if an adorable one. Lounges around, stretches, MEETS THE DAY ALL GENKI. She's already rocking the star motif, l-lol. Pajamas and mobile phone and all. You cannot talk to people and brush your teeth at the same time, Mato, don't do that. Mato heads off to school bright and early and cheerful, cut to BRS on the archetypal ruined bridge for a moment. Back to Mato instantly; she climbs up to the top of town to take a picture, is nearly completely late to school because of it. Yomi gets out of a car, Mato stares at her all :O, they cut back and forth between the two repeatedly.

- Lots of BRS slowly pacing through a seriously fucked up world. Nothing really happens, it's just there to showcase a bunch of scenes from the music video.

- Mato: reads Yomi's name wrong, spots her after assembly, catches up to her, and starts with the opener 'Maaan you're tall!' which is very smooth talk. They chat for a bit, Mato gets carried away, Yomi laughs and introduces herself. Mato immediately starts letting her imagination run wild on her surname. Then promptly walks past their classroom.

- More BRS pacing, more references, whatever. I'll mention her when something actually happens. BRS' eye does not need to be on fire for her to be carrying the cannon around, is it just a super meter gauge or what?

- Various highschool life scenes between Yomi and Mato, it's all very cute. Despite being a tremendous midget (Mato is the shortest person in the anime at this point) she is top-notch at basketball. Yomi earns unlimited and constant love by handing over her notes to Mato. That is at least three of my guesses confirmed right there.

- BRS and DM finally meet! I was wrong - DM doesn't immediately get a cannon to the face, she gets a offered hand instead. At this point I'm pretty sure that 'locked in constant battle' thing from the en plot precis is rubbish because I totally wasn't expecting that. It does, however, lead to BRS instantly getting owned in the face by a skull, good going there. She picks herself right back up - maybe she's just crazy regeneration or something. Either that or huke can't draw wounds aside from scars. DM only shows signs of life when BRS flares her superpower eye - whereupon the smiles come out.

- Mato drags Yomi up to the top of town, where Yomi starts angsting; Mato responds by handing over a blue star cellphone strap because she is violently unoriginal and loves stars. Anyway it's terribly heartwarming.

- BRS and DM fight some. BRS doesn't actually seem to have a sword? She just swings and smashes her cannon around, using it to block and bash. The fighting style is very 'midair hanging in place'. Very chaotic fighting - I'd screencap it but it wouldn't really make much sense, and most of the in-motion stuff looks really weird anyway as animation quality drops. The cannon really does fire rock bullets, huge great buckshot projectiles that wreck an entire room. DM is dodging for like a minute after one blast.

- Whole bunch of jumpcuts of 'life in the first year', then Mato taking a tumble and needing support from the Third Wheel Girl to get first aid. Cue amazing jealousy from Yomi and everything quickly going downhill - they're in different classes for the 2nd year, Third Wheel keeps interrupting them and being chummy with Mato during club. This series is now called 'Mato cannot take a hint'. Yomi watches them natter, then disappears in a cloud of black smoke.

- BRS starts to get owned, falling through the floor of the church their fights start off in and then getting beat up by DM's skulls. BRS has a 'light' version of her cannon and, if she sits there and focuses for a moment, it turns into Insane BRS's full-arm blade thing, which she full-out cleaves the skulls apart. DM runs off in what is a blatant attempt to lead BRS into a trap. BRS follows because she is dumb.

- Yomi's completely disappeared. Won't answer calls, turn up to club, meet her in the mornings, or even turn up to school. Mato isn't even sure how to text her at this point, leaving a blank page on her phone and staring at it, but at least it's nice to see her getting the blank BRS look in there. Finally, she gets a mail that Yomi's parents have reported her missing, and the police turn up to have a word with her, whereupon Mato epic baws forever.

- BRS chases DM some more down a long passageway, which rapidly fills with DM's chain-fu. Being a hero, she flashsteps most of them and then cuts straight through the rest with the cannonsword, ending in a gigantic arena with DM chillin' out on a statue in the middle. More fighting. DM mostly uses chains and scythe and terrifying smiles, while BRS runs around shooting things and attempting to stab with the most impractical hand-to-hand weapon ever seen. When DM sweeps her and puts her on the ground, a no-nonsense look from BRS precedes an unceremonious blasting apart of the scythe right as it comes down, whereupon Yomi just takes to the skies and starts using all chains and kicks.

- Mato is busy angsting in school. The Third Wheel tells her to buck up, but she's not feeling it, so Third Wheel gives a lecture about how she and the club are feeling left out as well. Die in a fire, Third Wheel. One night, Mato's phone lights up with a message from Yomi, but she won't pick up, so instead Mato runs out to meet her, biking at breakneck speed to the hill they ~shared~ where she finds the cellphone strap she gave her - which promptly glows like mad as a star and column of light appears, whisking her away.

- We all know how this bit goes, BRS is chained up but then breaks free with application of sheer brute force and the sudden infusion of will to SAVE YOMI... which would be more impressive if we saw any of it on screen, what the hell! BRS clenches, a couple links break, and then she's standing up. On the other hand, as Yomi steps backwards over a huge pit, BRS is simply dissolving chains with her bare fists now, which is pretty badass. When she finally has DM cornered she... holds out her hand again. SO BADASS, MATO. DM responds by looking really sulky and taking a step back - which sends her off the platform they're on. When BRS catches her - in a full hug - there's the briefest of flashes as her face goes back to Yomi's normal one, I can't cap it properly, and then she gets reaaaalllly mad, trying to push out of the hug - and leaving Yomi behind, falling into incorporeality. Which is, of course, when the place starts to come down around their ears. BRS works on carrying Yomi out of there.

- Mato opens her eyes to find herself on a white starry plain. BRS, floating in a bubble in the sky (DAMN IT) says 'do you wish to save her?' Mato gives a tremendously heartfelt speech and they merge up. (It's only then Mato thinks to ask 'who are you?', gj there.) Credits roll.

- Mato and Yomi are walking happily to school, Third Wheel lagging behind. She stops as the other two continue on, her mood getting darker. Mato and Yomi stop, look back, and Mato encourages her to hurry up in a hilarious scene where she looks totally out of place, totally setting up the sequel for yet more angst as Mato can't treat any of her friends right. Trouble is we had no time whatsoever to care for her so it's just kind of funny instead.

- SO. UHM. SHIT. Yomi's alive, Mato's alive and not BRS anymore, BRS is some extradimensional badass who goes around kicking other huke emoblobs in the face. I FEEL DISSATISFIED WITH THIS. More importantly how the fuck do I reconcile this with DRS? /o\
