How exactly do we write our college essay? It's supposed to be informal and I guess rather personal? But what do we put in. How do we make it casual putting in our education and life in the same paper. I guess it's not too hard, but I dont see how I could write it. We have to write one for english and it's due tuesday. I'm afraid to hand it in to ( Read more... )

wow, this sounds exactly like me. i just had to read mine out loud on friday. i guess that no matter WHAT the question is, try to talk about ONE, specific experience if it's possible. you're trying to convey something to the admissions that isnt on your regular app, so don't fit in SAT scores or all the clubs you're in and volunteer work (unless of course the essay is about leadership or something along those lines.) i'm not the best at essays so im bad with advice.

he makes us get into a circle and read it. (my teacher intimidates the hell out of me too.)
the only good thing was that there were only 11 people in the class yesterday because of a field trip and a football game. i liked all the students so it went ok. he gave me no advice on my essay, except that i needed to revise the last part of my conclusion. so i still have no idea if people like it or not. the end. damn ap english.

Hmm.. Well, I think you should simply be yourself. :) You can talk about education and add how personal it may be to you. Don't worry about the teacher, just write it like you normally would, and I think you'd feel more comfortable that way. Good luck! :)

I had trouble with this too. How can you sum up who you are in 500 words or less?

I think the easiest way is to find a focus & list all the possibilities. Make the essay illustrate something about yourself. If you're compassionate, don't just say "and I'm compassionate" show them how you're compassionate. Sample essays from a book (there are many in the library) are a good way to get some ideas going.

yes yes. i have an idea of what to write about, i just dont really know how to write it. everytime i start, i think of one sentence, then revise it for 2 hours. not very progressive.
anyway, thanks for the advice. ill try to look for some samples.

You don't. Oh well. In a nutshell, your essay isn't going to make your college admissions, only break it maybe.

I know, helpful huh.
