Prologue

Setting- at the star festival near the river.

Nana looked at her wish once more to make sure she had worded it correctly. She didn't want any mistakes. If something bad ended up happening to her, it wasn't going to be her fault. Satisfied, she took her wish and strung a piece of string though it. As she made her way toward the bamboo tree, she noticed a short shadowy figure over her shoulder. Nana quickened her pace, walking at almost a run toward the tree. The figure quickened its pace too. Scared, Nana sprinted toward the tree where her best friend's parents were. The figured tackled her and turned her toward it.

"NO! No, please! Don't do it," Nana screamed. She had heard of the night assassin on TV. They said it was a male who liked to take women’s eyes and pop them out their head, then he would laugh as he strangles them to death. "Leave my eyes alone!"

"Your eyes are pretty, Nana, but I don't want them." A boyish voice chuckled.

Nana opened her eyes to see her friend Akira on top of her. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm down. It was just like Akira to play such mean tricks on people-especially girls. For him to be a teenager, he acted like a three-year-old. Nana pushed her friend off of her, before punching him in the knee.

"You jerk. You scared me! I thought you were the ‘night assassin.’ Don't ever do that to me again, or you'll regret it."

Akira rubbed his knee. "More than I regret it right now?" He smirked, helping the nine-year-old girl up. "I was only trying to see what you wished for."

"It’s… it’s none of your business!" Nana replied, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink. Aki could make any girl blush, even his sister. He was quite cute with long black hair that was never combed. He had the most unusual blue eyes that Nana had ever seen. They were a topaz color when he was happy, like he was now, but sometimes, they'd change color. He had a very attractive smile and he was tall. Even though he was only thirteen, he already had four girlfriends and even more girls liked him. He was the most sought after guy at Sobani Middle school. But even though he was attractive, he wasn't the whole package. He wasn't smart, nor was he popular with the guys. And because of his health, he couldn’t play sports. He tripped over his own feet often, and his attention span was short.

"What's none of my business?”

Four words: very short attention span.

Nana grabbed her head then started for the bamboo tree. "Never mind. So what did you wish for, mister?"

"Can't tell or else it won’t come true."

Nana nodded, tying her wish onto the tree. "Well you can tie yours now. I won't look. I promise."

"I've heard that before. You're not getting a peek at my goods-not like the others!" Aki shouted, stepping away from her, covering his chest with his hands.

"What are you talking about?"

"Never you mind… just no looking." Aki covered the front of his pants, narrowing his gaze on Nana. His gaze snapped to his sister playing by the river. "Rikka! Get away from there." He took off toward the river with Nana not too far behind him.

Nana watched as Akira grabbed his sister's arm, pulling her away from the river. He was too over protective. Even if Rikka did fall in the river, she wouldn't get hurt because it was shallow near the shore, where Rikka was. Shaking her head, she folded her arms.

"You know how protective your brother is, miss." She patted Akira on the shoulder. "She'll be fine."

"Get off me, you big dork!" Akira's little sister yelled. She pushed her brother away from her, then adjusted her yukata. She tightened her orange obi pulled her blue Yukata down, straightening it. She combed her fingers through her short black hair. She glanced at Akira and snorted as she headed for Nana. "Hey, Na."

"What did you wish for?"

"I'll tell you if you tell me yours."

"HEY! I want to know what you wished for . Don't you care about what I wished for?! Nana, you're not being fair. You're so mean to me!" Aki whined, stomping his foot. Nana laughed, shaking her head. Akira smiled. Her laugh was so weird. She breathed in when she laughed which made her snort. It was kind of funny.

"Greetings to all!" a cheerful voice called from behind them. They all turned to see that their other three friends were behind them. The first girl was Ran. Her long black hair was pulled into a bun and was held up by green ribbons that dangled from her head. She wore a pink obi and a green Yukata that had pink blooming flowers at the bottom. Beside her was her twin sister, Tsubasa. Her long black hair was in a half pony tail with the back out. She wore a purple obi with a brown Yukata with a purple coat. And the last girl was Kurumi, a dear friend of Nana's. She wore her mother's black Yukata and a red obi. Her long curly hair was parted down the middle and flowed down her back.

"Hey, girls." Akira smiled, walking toward the nine-year-old girls. "I was wondering when all the beauty was going to arrive." He flashed a smile.

"Whatever, Kira." Ran rolled her eyes. She made her way over to Nana to give her a hug. Tsubasa ran after Ran, clinging to her big sister.

Nana watched the twins. Tsubasa was sick as a child, so it was up to Ran to take care of her when they weren't around their parents, which were often. Ran wanted Tsubasa to be happy and has a life, so they only stayed in the house when Tsubasa was sick or ordered to have bed rest. She would never leave her sister nor would she even think about it. Taking care of her sister was her life. Tsubasa knew that Ran was the only person other than her mother who really cared about her. She was almost never around her mother so Ran was her mother figure. She reminded her to take her pills, and when she should eat. She would cook and clean for her. And when she was in the hospital, Ran would wash her up and do her hair. When they were little, Ran used to sing her to bed. So, because she loved her sister/mother so much, she would cling to her like a child would its mother. It was amazing that Ran could handle being not only the care-taker but also as a best friend for so many years. If Nana had a sister, she knew that she wouldn't be as protective as Akira or such a good sister as Ran.

"Hey, Nana!" Ran greeted, hugging her best friend.

"Hey, Nana!" Tsubasa echoed.

"Sup?" Nana hugged Ran and Tsubasa back. "Did you guys come here alone?!" When the girls nodded, Na began to start fussing at them. "Do you know how dangerous it is to walk the street at night, especially for three young girls-?"

Akira burst into laughter, holding his stomach. "NA! Good gosh, woman. There is no such thing as the 'Night Assassin'. Not everyone is afraid of every bad thing they see on the news. Some of us don't live such a sheltered life."

"Aki… " Kurumi warned him. "If you don't shut up, I'll do it for you. And when I do it, I make sure that you scream first then you never have kids. Got it?"

Akira gasped, covering his pants, taking a step back. The girls laughed. Turning to Nana, Kurumi gave her a weak smile.

"If you're so worried about it, then you can always give us a ride home in that limo of yours…. But then again, our neighborhoods aren't safe. We should spend the night at your house."

"AH! You're using me!"

"Exactly. So can we come over?"

"Hmm…. Sure, why not?" Nana clapped happily. "Mom is gone for the weekend. I got money, so it’s no problem."

Akira pouted and crossed his arms and poking his lips out. He looked away from Nana. "I guess that means that I can't come." He said, batting his eye lashes.

Nana laughed. "Of course you can, Aki. I don't have a problem with it."

Even though he was a boy, he was a boy who couldn't get anywhere with any of the girl here. If there were other women over, then she might be worried. Aki was well known for being a lady man. He could make any female fall under his spell except for the five here that is.

Rikka groaned, "But NANA!"

She looked at her brother, then rolled her eyes. He was always around her and he didn't do anything but watch over her. Akira went to a totally different school, yet somehow, he was able to go to her school and check up on her. Every waking moment, he was there. There was no reason for him to be so over protective.

"He's a boy!"

"Yeah, and he can sleep in a totally different wing of the house. Don't worry-" Nana looked up, seeing a tall brown haired girl walk toward their group. Her name was Yuri. She was one of the girls who went to Akira's school. She was also Akira's fan girl. "Witch at two o'clock."

The girls looked up at her. Ran groaned, rolling her eyes as Tsubasa bit her lip to keep from saying anything. Kurumi placed her hands in her pockets. Rikka placed her hands on her hips, as Aki walked up to the worrisome girl. Yuri smiled walking over Akira. Her short brown hair was curled over her left eye. "Hello, Aki-baby." She greeted, placing her hands on her hips, smiling. She had an annoying smile. It was like she was trying too hard to smile so her smile came out too big.

"Hello, Yuri." He smiled. Tipping his head slightly to the left, he continued. "I didn't know you were going to be here." Turning around, he grabbed Yuri's hand and pulled her to his side. "Have you met my sisters?"

Yuri blushed as Akira held her hand. "Um . . . "

Nana rolled her eyes. The girl was so stupid that she couldn't even remember her own classmates. Why was Akira with someone like her? "Yea, she knows us."

Rikka tapped Nana on her shoulder. " Um . . . Nana . . . your grammar. It's 'Yeah. She knows us.' The subject numbers agreement-"

Nana glared at Rikka from the corner of her eye. "... Rikka . . .”

Rikka took a step back. She forgot that Nana often tried to put her brother's girlfriends down. When she was like that, it was best to leave her alone. But for some reason, Rikka usually got in trouble the most at these times. "... Sorry!"

Yuri smiled walking over to Rikka, patting the girl on her head. "You are so cute. How old are you?" the girl asked. Rikka immediately didn't like her. She made her look like a child and spoke to her like she was a baby. She was worse than Akira.

Tsubasa raised her hand. "I'm nine!" She cheered for herself. Nana glared at her best friend as Yuri made her way over to Tsubasa.

"Nine. That's so cute!" Yuri patted the younger Hirogime on the head. "And you've got white strains in your hair!"

"Yeah. I'm a panda. Growl."

Yuri laughed. Like her smile, which was forced and over the top. She was trying too hard to be nice and cute. If Akira couldn't see that, then there was something wrong with him. Anyone could tell this girl was a fake. There probably wasn't one real thing about her, especially not her nose. She was 12 but she wore make-up and wore clothes that were too revealing for her age. Like now she wore a red Chinese dress with that fitted tightly to her body and the split came up to her tight.

Personally, Nana thought she looked like a whore. How could someone not care about looking like that just because some boy appeared to like her? What did Akira see in her? Everything was “so cute.” Was her vocabulary limited to only those two words? Nana's mother would have blamed that on public schooling, but Nana knew better. She was one of the girls who passed every class because she was beautiful and was a cheerleader. Yuri probably couldn't do two plus two, yet she would pass with an A. She could smile and twist her hair between her fingers, and boys would fall all over themselves for her. If she batted her eye lashes, a geek would do her homework for her. She always used her beauty to her advantage. Or was it because she had money?

Nana knew the effects of money very well. Flash some of it at the right times and one could get anything they wanted like a teacher changing that E on a test to a B, or a principal to take funding away from the drama club or American Culture Club, just because she didn't think they were important. How Nana hated Yuri?!

"Tsubasa…" Nana growled. Rikka rushed over to Tsubasa, pulling her away from Yuri. Rikka whispered something in Tsubasa's ear, then they rushed off, Ran trailing behind them. Kurumi smirked and crossed her arms as Nana tried to calm down. Yuri smiled and made her way over to Akira.

"Adorable, isn't she?" Akira asked, pulling Yuri to his side.

"Yea."

Kurumi bit her lip before leaning forward, whispering in Nana's ear, "She has no clue what adorable means, does she?"

Nana's lip twirled. Kurumi took that as encouragement . "... She probably thinks he means Tsubasa stinks."

Nana smiled, pushing Kurumi. "Stop."

Kurumi shrugged, sliding her hands into her pockets. "Well, I'll be going now, Yuri. Bye-Bye." She bid farewell to Yuri like she was a young child who didn't understand words yet. Yuri waved cheerfully as Kurumi walked off in the direction that Tsubasa and the others left in.

Nana shook her head at her friends. Yuri cleared her throat, catching Nana's attention. The stupid brown-haired girl wrapped her arms around Akira's neck and pulled him to her. She closed his eyes with her fingers, then pressed her lips against his, staring at Nana the whole time. That hateful witch! She was purposely trying to piss Nana off. Nana turned on her heel and followed Kurumi. Smirking, Yuri finished her kiss and hugged Akira.

"Are you going to spend the night with me, Aki-baby? We haven't had a sleepover in a long time. Don't you miss playing with me?"

Akira looked her up and down. "Just you? Only you?"

Yuri could see the look of pure boredom on his face. Desperate for his attention, Yuri shook her head. "I know about Mimi, Zoe, and Sayu. If you want, I can call them up. Don't you think that'll be fun?"

"You know, I think you only want to keep me from being around them."

"...Aki! I would never-"

Akira placed his finger on her lips. "Don't lie to me. And don't call me Aki." With that he started off towards Yuri's house.

Yuri, stunned, stood where she was for a few moments. He wasn't the same person he was when he was around his family and friends. When he was with her and the others, he was like this. It made her wonder what was he really like.

"Nana, are you ok?" Rikka asked as she slid into the black stretch limo. When Nana crossed her arm and her legs, she knew something was wrong, but she wasn't going to tell. "Was it Yuri?"

"Rikka, hush." Kurumi stopped her. She sat down next to Nana, hugging her. "Nana lost to someone with the IQ of a peanut. She's not in a good mood."

"I don't like any of the girls that Akira has ever been with, but I hate her!"

Rikka bit her lip to keep from correcting Nana on her grammar. Rikka knew that it was just the accent that she gained from the years she spent in the continent, but it was something that Rikka didn't like. She was perfectionist when it came to languages.

“I see."

"When are we going to eat?" Tsubasa whined. She grabbed her stomach for emphasis.

Ran crossed her legs, resting her head in the palm of her hands. "You just ate three slices of pizza, two ice cream cups, four bags of chips, and a lobster in less than three minutes. Do you really think you should be eating anything else for the next couple of hours? You'll get a stomach ache."

"But RAN!''

"Not for another hour, Tsu." Ran said with finality in her voice. She gave Tsubasa a stern look then turned her gaze out the window. "Its doing to rain."

"Yeah, the weather man called for it. But it is raining season,” Rikka added. "This reminds me, I have a practice tomorrow. I can't spend the night, Nana."

"So… bye." Nana snapped, knocking on the window of the limo that sealed the driver's seat from the rest of the limo. "Johnson, please take Ms. Miwa home."

"Now, ma'am? Or would you rather after you spend some time together before I take Ms. Miwa home?"

Nana glanced at Rikka. "Well?"

"You don't have to get all snippy! Gosh. Just because you're mad at my brother doesn't mean you have to get mad with me," Rikka mumbled. "If you're going to be mean to me all night then you can take me home."

"MEAN?! I'M GIVING YOU A RIDE WHEN YOU COULD BE WALKIN' HOME."

"I HAVE MY PARENTS THERE. IN FACT, IF IT WASN'T FOR THEM, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COME!"

"DON'T FORGET WHO YOU ARE TALKING TO."

"I HAVEN'T. I'M YELLING AT NANA TAKANORI."

Nana rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Johnson, take her home, please."

"No thank you. I'd rather walk. " Rikka threw back, getting out of the car as it stopped at a red light. Ran looked from Nana to Rikka then to Tsubasa. "It’s raining out. Stay with Nana and Kurumi." She got of the car as well, running after Rikka.

Tsubasa smiled, pulling on her hood. "I get to play in the rain!" She rushed out after Ran closing the door behind her. Kurumi looked from Nana to the closed door and shrugged. This happened all the time. Rikka and Nana would bump heads. Rikka usually would come back to Nana and apologize, even if it was Nana's fault, like it was now. But that was how their friendship worked-even if it was a stupid way for them to get over it, and an even more stupid argument that they got into.

"Nana, what did Yuri do?"

"Nothing-"

"Don't lie to me. I know you too well. If nothing happened, then you wouldn't take the anger that you have for Akira out on his little sister." Kurumi said in an emotionless tone. Staring at Nana from the corner, Kurumi continued. "Dude, here isn't anything so bad that you take your anger out on someone other than the person who made you mad."

"Yuri kissed Akira and he didn't care. She called him Aki and he didn't tell her anything. He was like pudding in her hands." Nana tightened her hands into fist. "He reminded me so much of her. He acted like one of the men I hate."

"I see."

Nana looked at Kurumi from the corner of her eye. Sighing, she knocked on the window again. "Johnson, could you drive around the block. Ran and Tsubasa should have found her by now." Pulling out her cell phone, she called Ran's cell. "Did you find her?"

"Yeah. Tsubasa is talking to her now. Are you coming to pick us up? You taking her home?"

"No. She has practice tomorrow, but she can be late. She's coming to my house whether she likes it or not."

Ran looked over her shoulder at her sister who was signally that she and Rikka want to make chocolate if they were going to Nana's house. Ran nodded. "They want to make chocolate at your house to make up for the argument."

"I don't care."

~Later that night~

"Tsubasa..." Kurumi poked the burnt subject on her plate. "How did you manage to burn chocolate?"

Tsubasa looked down at her chocolate. Picking it up, she bit into it. "I broke my tooth!"

Rikka, Ran, and Nana laughed at the poor girl. Taking a deep breath, Rikka picked up her chocolate, eating it. "Mine is edible. HA!"

"Mean!"

Nana smiled, turning to Rikka. "Have you heard from your brother?"

"Nope. He's probably with Yuri. Mom and I had a bet that he'd have half of Tokyo pregnant before he turns twenty. So far I'm losing. He's slept with half of Tokyo." Rikka noticed that she said the wrong thing and shook her head. "That wasn't what I meant. What I meant was-”

"It’s okay, Rikka. But my question is, why would Akira be with a girl like that? She totally isn’t good for him."

"She's easy. Like half the population of Tokyo, they'd sleep with a handsome face and a gorgeous body," Ran murmured as she bit into her sister's chocolate. "He's taking advantage of that. And why shouldn't he? He has the looks, and girls drop over him. Actually, he has nothing else going for him: except his good personality. He was a sick kid, you know. He's gonna take advantage of actually being popular even if it makes the guys hate him and Nana doesn't care for him anymore."

Nana rolled her eyes. The others agreed. God, why did she even cared for him? He was her childhood friend, and she didn't want him to get hurt or used. That, in the least, was the reason why she was so overprotective and tried to protect him. Wasn't it?
