Need Girly Girl Hair Help

Ok so...I know you guys never noticed but....I'm a tomboy. Yes, I know, take a deep breath, it's a shocker. So, being one since forever...I have never spent very much time messing with my hair. As you know, recently, I started growing out my hair. It has successfully cascaded to the point past my shoulders now

I cannot figure out how any device would allow you to keep the correct tension on the braid itself. Even if it held all the strands for you, it sounds like a Bad Idea(tm) and a ripoff to me.

Unfortunately, the way I learned was to watch someone stand in front of me with their back to me, doing it on herself, and I tried to follow along. And then I stood in front of a mirror myself for many days after that till my arms ached, and taught myself all the ways I could screw it up. :) Because doing it on yourself is reversed from doing it on anyone else, so you have to learn on yourself SOMEtime.

I know this is less than helpful. I'd at least volunteer to stand in front of you and talk you through it once or twice...?
