Title: Down And Up
Pairing: Ryo/Uchi, friendship
Rating: G (or PG-13 for language)

Note: Kind of out of it with JE so I apologize if the characterization sucks.

Written for my favourite cookie, to give her a bit of courage ♥

Three steps and he goes down.

His body goes rigid, his hands claw at the air and he twists awkwardly but nothing does the trick. It’s the floor that breaks his fall, and Ryo has to remain unmoving for an instant, breath knocked out of his lungs, glaring ungrateful at the carpet. His knees hurt, the heels of his hands burn, and the blue laces of a familiar pair of shoes are tangled suspiciously around his ankle.

He’s going to kill Uchi.

“Ryo-chan, is that you?” A voice calls from around the corner.

Ryo groans, pulls at the stupidly long laces and throws the shoes as hard as he can down the corridor. “Your fucking shoes!” He growls.

Uchi appears at the end of the corridor the next second. “What about them?” He asks, blinking at the shoes lying at his feet. He pokes them experimentally with the tip on his socked foot before bringing his attention back to Ryo. Ryo who is still on the floor at the entrance of their apartment - the apartment they share, Ryo has to remind himself once again, the one that’s not his alone anymore, his own little shelter to hide from the world and unwind.

“Why are you sitting on the floor?” Uchi asks, then, and Ryo has to resist the urge to scream and throw him out of the apartment. It’s still his name on the lease anyway; he could probably get away with it.

Instead, Ryo groans and picks himself up from the floor. “There’s a fucking shoe rack right over there,” and he points for good measure, “what do you think it’s for?”

Uchi raises an eyebrow. “There’s a shoe rack?” He asks innocently. “Oh, you mean that thing underneath the hundred billions pairs of your shoes?”

Ryo glares. He stalks over to Uchi, grabs the shoes, and then throws them on top of the rack (on top of a few pair of his own shoes, yes, admittedly). “There,” he says. “And next time you leave them in the middle of the fucking hall, I’ll strangle you with them in your sleep.”

Uchi snorts as Ryo passes him by. “You’re going to strangle me with my shoes?”

“Don’t try me,” Ryo spits back.

He’s too tired for this, he thinks when Uchi only laughs back. He’s had a horribly long day at work and he’s too fucking tired for this. All he wants is peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers at the top of his speakers and a nice icy cold one. He also wants a shower. And food.

When he gets out of the shower some twenty minutes later, he feels slightly better. Or at least good enough to notice the uncharacteristic sweet and spicy smell that fills the air.

Uchi’s in the kitchen. And there is food on the table, warm and ready to be eaten.

“You don’t cook,” is all Ryo finds to say, towel still flung over his wet head.

Uchi rolls his eyes. “No, but I’m very good at take-out,” he replies. “I dropped by the conbini and got us beer too,” he adds, and Ryo suddenly thinks he can maybe possibly deal with this whole roommates business thing.

He doesn’t say thanks, and Uchi probably doesn’t really expect him to, but he does poke Uchi’s foot with his own a few times during the meal, and by the end of it smiling seems easier.
