“She’s... cute,” Ryo says after they drop Uchi’s girlfriend and her friend off. Inside, he wonders why the words have to taste so bitter at the back of his throat. He shouldn’t have agreed to a double date. He should never agree to double dates with Uchi.
“Yeah, she’s cute.” Uchi nods absently. He’s staring out the window from the passenger seat. Ryo doesn’t know if it makes things easier or worse that he isn’t looking at Ryo.
“Is it serious between the two of you?” He asks.
“Mm, I wonder,” Uchi replies.
Ryo’s hands tighten on the steering wheel. He could easily loose his temper, yell at Uchi to stop being so freaking vague, so fucking apathetic. It’s just wrong, uncharacteristic somehow, and it grates on Ryo’s nerves more than anything else about this situation. Instead, he bites down on his tongue and breathes through his nose. If he snaps now, he will have to explain later, and there is a four-page letter on this subject that Ryo’s not quite ready to let Uchi read just yet.
“Do you like Michiko-chan, Ryo-chan?” Uchi asks, tone casual, almost disinterested, and it takes a moment for Ryo to remember who the hell he’s talking about. “Because she seems to like you,” Uchi adds before finally turning around to look at Ryo. “Maybe we should go out again, what do you think?”
Ryo feels his mouth go dry. He swallows the lump of unsaid feelings in his throat and shifts his gaze back to the road. “Yeah. Sure,” he agrees. “Why not.”
He shouldn’t agree to double dates. He should never agree to double dates with Uchi. But somehow he always does.
