Wow! This is so cool. I too am astounded at the number of (toxic) beauty products in the world, and people's addictions to them. When I was at Earthaven there was a fellow there who hadn't washed his hair (except with water) for several years. It looked fine. My boyfriend was inspired by this and started only rinsing his hair in the shower. I think right now it's been about 5 months since he washed it, and again, it looks fine. Good even ( ... )

i definitely back up her recommendation, and (iirc?) we have somewhat similar hair types. not only is it cheaper and easier, but my hair actually looks and feels MUCH better using this method. added bonus, low-flow showerheads aren't a disaster for me anymore because i'm not trying to get conditioner out of my hair. :)

this is a good community to check out, especially the link to "basics" on the orange bar near the top, which also has pretty good troubleshooting tips.

*nod* iirc, the reason i mentioned slippery being good is that if your hair DOESN'T get slippery with the BS, it's probably because you have hard water and should not use it anymore. BS+hard water=gummy mess that doesn't come out until it wants to, after lots and lots of brushing. i had basically a disaster with that in Spain, and have recently discovered that washing my hair at Adam's place in PA is also a bad idea (though not quite as disastrous as Spain, ahhhh). i think i'm going to experiment with salt for awhile before i make my next set of travel plans - i'm down to about once every five days, but i try not to go past that because i don't like keeping my hair clean with my brush (it works, but my brushes get gross and are annoying to clean ( ... )

Hmm. I am interested in (and terrified of) trying this. Two questions that I don't see immediately covered on the no poo community:
1) my scalp breaks out really badly if I don't shampoo daily. Any experience/thoughts on what effect switching over will have? I'm hoping the whole natural oils thing will help...
2) my hair breaks pretty easily, especially in the front when I wear it in a ponytail. What I'm reading gives me the impression that it will be stronger without shampoo, but again, any actual experience with this?

i don't have experience with that, but i still think you should give it a shot - my guess is that your scalp is overproducing oil since it gets stripped so often, and it will stop doing that when it realizes it doesn't have to.

i don't have experience with hair breakage either, but from what i've read it does help some people - and it certainly won't weaken your hair, that much i can say. (some people notice more split ends when they first try this, but it's actually because the split ends were there all along, and the chemicals in conditioner were hiding them by sort of gluing them together.)

if you haven't, check out the no poo community - they have pretty comprehensive tags, so i'm guessing you can find more info on your questions. if not, post a question - it's an active community, so you should get some good answers. :)

do it do it!

Dur hur, Natalie being back in Japan essentially means that I ignore all forms of human contact that require thought. -__- I don't have any particular advice on either, because I've always been really lucky about body type things, but I would bet you're in for a rough couple weeks. -__- My biggest no poo mistake was thinking I could make the switch immediately without any sort of consequences ( ... )
