she took the midnight train going anywhere

I basically had the perfect weekend this past weekend. I had a friend visiting me and we sat around watching JGL movies, talking about fandom and life, and ordering all our meals in the form of delivery. We ended up watching Hesher, 50/50, Brick, Manic... and then ended the weekend by watching Reichenbach. (We clearly hate ourselves). Also, I don't ( Read more... )

the real world, my friends are awesome, ask the audience, fandom is going to eat me, adventures in grad school

You should totally sign up for the Teen Wolf big bang. Yes, it starts with vague ideas, but then suddenly you have like 3k of meta and notes and outline, and you might as well just write the damn thing. DOOOO IIIIIIIIIT.

Ahahahaha, part of me wants to. But the rest of me knows that once it's written, I'll just want to throw it at the internet and hide. Posting dates really get in the way of that. I have a bit more time to contemplate though!

I would say, if you have a good relationship with her, list her anyway. But pretty much every non-retail job that I have has definitely called my references and, when they couldn't get in touch with one, called and asked for another. If there's someone else you can use, you might want to consider doing that. While it's good to have references from your sciencey background for a sciencey job, mostly they just call to make sure you're not a serial killer or anything. General questions like your attitude, if they enjoyed working with you, etc.

Well it's good to know that places do tend to contact references! I've only formally applied to a job once in my life, and I never found out if they called my references. I might take the advice below and let her know that I put her on the form and if it's a problem, that I can redirect them when it comes up. Thanks! :D

Re: listing the reference: What I would do is write her back and say, "I see you're out of office until September. I've got a job application deadline coming up. I'm going to put you down as a preliminary reference. If you have any problems with that, please let me know when you get back." That way, she won't be startled if she's got a message when she gets back from the job (which, odds are low, but you never know). I assume you think she'll give you a reference, of course.

Hope that's helpful!

That's actually really helpful! She is honestly my BEST reference, so my application would definitely be lacking if she wasn't included... but I also want to finalize everything this week, so I think I will go with this approach. Thanks so much! <3

Is she out of office and not checking messages at all?? I know I work at a high school not a college, but there is a LOT of staff still in the building during the summer getting stuff done, but we are not CONTRACTUALLY obligated to be back until September, so any parent calls trying to schedule meetings or evaluations goes straight to voicemail, and "nope, we're not back yet, etc." But were one of us to call, we could probably get a call back...?

Also, how many methods of contact do you have with your supervisors? If you know they can be reached via email more easily than phone, include their email address as well. I've been contacted for job interviews via email -- as in, no phone call or anything, just an email. I'm sure people nowadays may do references the same way?

I would guess that she is officially not on campus since the 2nd summer session is over by now, so this would be a good time for her to take vacation. I guess I could just walk over there tomorrow. /lazy.

Also, I had not thought of the email thing. The form doesn't ask for an email, but I think I might add it on there anyway since I know most of my references tend to be in and out of their office.

Yay references! Where are you applying again? I have been... out of touch, eh?

Haha, maybe just a little. :P I'm still in school so I'm just applying for a part-time thing (evenings and weekends) with the museum of science's overnight programs. Something fun to add to the resume, really.

How've you been?
