shared dream

You sit against the trunk of an old tree, next to a river. The setting sun reflects orange and red off the surface off the water, the silence only broken by the the quiet lap of water against the riverbank.

Our comrade is still missing.

You don’t have to turn to know who the speaker is an enormous white baboon with dark markings, eyes calm and fierce at once. He stands in the grass, somehow not out of place in the peaceful scene.

“Yeah, I know.” Your voice is brooding, and you shift, the bark digging into your back. “We’re still looking for her.”

This place is fickle.

This voice is higher, more strident; it comes from the snake that forms the baboon’s tail. Swallowing people and spitting them out again like a petulant child.

You snort. “Or a retarded one. Fucking place.” You fall silent, brooding once more. “It is kinda like a kid, huh? Playing with us and shit.”

Except most kids didn’t have this kind of power, and you weren’t at their mercy.

Fuck, were they ever going to catch a break?

You realize a low growl has been building in the baboon’s chest, and turn to look at him in surprise.

“What is it?” you ask, frowning in alarm. Is something coming?

The growl grows to a shriek, and he bares his fangs at you. Hooting and jumping, there’s suddenly something in his hand and holy fuck that better not be--

Raise your head! Do not bow before the whims of a child!

You jump up and duck behind the tree, just as a piece of baboon shit goes flying past you.

“Fuck, Zabimaru, stop! The hell is wrong with you?”

The baboon is still hooting and shrieking, shit is still flying, and you wonder why the hell he’s so pissed.

You poke your head out from behind the tree, and a glob barely misses your nose. “That almost hit me!” you snarl. Now just as angry, you step out all the way to face him, the air growing heavy with the power building up around you.

Zabimaru stops, although his teeth are still bared.

Good. Better. Servility--

--doesn’t suit you. Bend your head--

Both baboon and snake speak in unison now.

--to no one.

--to no one.

You stare in disbelief, then point, your voice rising in pitch and volume with your anger. “The fuck is wrong with you? Who the fuck throws shit to give a pep talk! That’s retarded!”

He chuckles, fading as you start to wake up.

Then what does that say about you?
Then what does that say about you?
