Notes: Based on this image, and written for nagasasu over at the Zuko/Katara fan-meme.
She doesn’t recognize herself at first, but then there is her necklace, and then the image in the strange mirror is unmistakable. It isn’t her grown reflection so much that startles Katara though; but rather it is the man at her side- unmistakably the Firelord. Unmistakably Zuko.
Zuko’s older too, and he lays a hand on her shoulder before leaning in and pressing his lips to her cheek in a soft kiss. Katara instinctively puts a hand over where his should be, but unlike her reflection, she’s all alone. She reaches out to the looking glass and as her fingertips touch the cool surface the image ripples like a disturbed pond. She isn’t sure how long she gazes at herself and Zuko- it could be minutes or hours, or perhaps it’s days. The rest of the world seems to fade away and it’s just them-- her future? But then a voice snaps her out of her trance and she looks over her shoulder.
“People could spend whole lives lookin’ in that there mirror. She’s a gift from the spirits to the swamp. You see somethin’ pretty?” Huu smiles at Katara. Katara looks from the man to the mirror and back.
“I… what am I looking at…? Is this… is this the future?”
“Well, I reckon it could be if’n you want it to be. As I understand it, that’s how this thing usually works.” He beams. “Shoot, from the way you keep lookin’ back, it must be real nice.”
Katara blushes. “It… yeah… It’s… really nice.” She shivers. She’s glad Toph isn’t around to feel that her heart is beating in double-time.
“Well then let’s hope you make it real!” Hue still smiles at her.
She looks back to the mirror and touches Zuko’s face. “Yeah…” She says softly. This could be real.
