i had a cat named gray that my family had even before i was born. i loved her so much and she used to sleep with me every night, she even came with me when i moved into my new house a couple of years back. one day my mom told me that she was taking gray in for a checkup and she came back home with an empty case. she had to put gray to sleep because she had an enlarged bladder. i cried for days and to this day i still miss her so much. it's such a hard thing to deal with, i know exactly how you feel <3
my kitty cat ran away once and she came back eventually but she was hurt so we had the option of putting her to sleep or paying to amputate her leg. so for a long time i had a cat with 3 legs.
i hope your kitty comes back... thats why i dont let my cats outside now. but you should call the pound because they will pick them up but you only have a couple of days before they sell it or put it to sleep.
